Welcome back to Seattle Pacific University’s Her Campus chapter! First, let’s catch up; it’s been a while, and we missed you! This summer, I was an intern for a non-profit organization called C4C (Communities for Schools). Through this experience, I learned how to properly table for events, do nonpartisan canvassing, phone banking, and student outreach. My main focus was to serve the Latinx community, aiming to help first-generation, low-income, parenting students and migrant students find scholarships, resources, and proper childcare. As an intern, as well as being a first-generation, low-income Mexican American student myself, this experience has involved dedication, hard work, vulnerability, and, most importantly, it has been a fulfilling blessing. Additionally, I also became president of the sociology club! I am very excited to collab with other clubs here at SPU (hopefully a writing sesh with her campus), as well as to bring awareness to students and staff here on campus of day-to-day issues, as well as global issues as well.Â
A priority of mine is to bring awareness of ICE activity throughout the state, as well as local activity. ICE has been very prominent in hurting our communities, and I want to use my platform not only as president, but as a writer, to make it known to students that they are not alone, and neither are their families. This fight is our fight, and no one can take away our knowledge, especially in a time when we need to become united to fight against the oppression of our communities.Â
Now, I leave you with the hindsight of many more articles yet to come as I start my second year at SPU. Without the support of my family, partner, friends, professors, and readers like you, I wouldn’t have had this beautiful initiative to become a writer for her campus. Thank you for reading and engaging with our chapter; you’ll hear from me soon!Â
