Vegan Restaurants to Check Out in San Antonio

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TAMUSA chapter.

A while back I wrote an article about why being a vegetarian has so many benefits for ourselves and the environment. Being a vegetarian or vegan is not an easy thing to do. It’s hard to just wake up one day and completely cut off meat from your diet. It took me weeks and a few cheat days until I was able to fully commit. One of the things I struggled with a lot when I went vegetarian was finding good places to eat out at. My friends are not vegetarian but they like to go with me to try new places because although it’s not for them they like to experience new things.

Here are some of my favorite places to eat in San Antonio that are Vegan/ Vegetarian Friendly.

Viva Vegeria

1422 Nogalitos St. San Antonio, TX 78204

I thought I would never get to enjoy Mexican Food again after I went vegetarian and that sounded like the end of the world to me. Viva Vegeria is completely plant-based and serves some of the best Tex-Mex food around. The atmosphere is very nice and there are very nice murals all around the restaurant.

Things I recommend trying: Chicken Enchiladas, Flautas de Camote & Pozole

Vegan Avenue

2512 N Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212

I found this place a while ago and like Viva they have nice outdoor seating. The food here ranges from Tacos to burgers to waffles, and it’s all delicious.

Things I recommend trying: Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Cucumber Chia Lemonade, Carne Asada Fries & Mexican Hash

Green Vegetarian

255 E Basse Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209

This restaurant used to be located at the pearl and near Shavano park but they recently moved the location to the Quarry. The owners are some of the nicest people ever and they gave my friends and I gift cards the first time we walked by.

Things I recommend trying: Chicken Parmesan, Cauliflower Wings & Green Burger

Blissful Burgers

3950 S Zarzamora St, San Antonio, TX 78225

Located on Zarzamora these are some of the best burgers I’ve had in a Hot minute. It’s a 15-minute drive from school and completely worth it. The seasoning makes it taste almost like a real burger for those who aren’t ready to give up on meat completely.

Things I recommend trying: The Patty Melt & Blissful Burger

Hash Vegan

5007 S Flores St, San Antonio, TX 78214

I found Hash Vegan late at night when I was with my friend and I was really hungry but didn’t want to cook. This place was opened until midnight the day I went. They have outdoor seating

with a huge projector where guests can play smash bros. The inside is very nicely decorated and it’s just a mellow palace to hang out in.

Things I recommend trying: Mac, Carne Asada Tacos & Cherry Pie Waffles

Thai Vegan

15614 Huebner Rd #113, San Antonio, TX 78248

This place speaks for itself. They have a large variety of Asian cuisine that has been modified to fit the vegan diet. It reminds me of my favorite restaurant in Houston, Chef Kennys.

Things I recommend trying: Golden Tofu, Fried Shrimp, Miso Soup & Wonton Noodle Soup

Project Pollo

723 N Alamo St, San Antonio, TX 78215

Project Pollo opened up last October and my friends and I call it the Vegan Chick fil a. It’s a drive-thru restaurant that has the best vegan chicken sandwiches in San Antonio.

Things I recommend trying: The Deluxe, Pico de Pollo, Chipotle Chicken Wrap & Mac and Cheese

Honorable Mentions: Tapatio Vegan Tacos, Earth Burger, La Botanica, Senor Veggie, Go Vegan & Plantyful Sweets
