The 2026 Emmy Awards honored some of the most talented performances on television this year, celebrating a wide variety of historic wins and new faces taking home trophies for their hard-earned achievements. However, when the night ended, there was an elephant in the room, waiting to be addressed.
No actors of color won in any of the 12 lead and supporting acting roles. This included a range of genres, from comedy to limited series. In a night meant to celebrate all actors and actresses, performers of color nominated for outstanding performances were left with nothing other than questions and concerns regarding their contention for the night.
The Night’s Biggest Loss and Surprise: Oscar Isaac
Oscar Isaac, best known for his work in Hollywood and considered an underrated talent, was nominated this year for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role as Joshua MartĂn in Beef.
Isaac was predicted to win the category by the Los Angeles Times, which emphasized his range in the show. On the Los Angeles Times Buzzmeter, Isaac was also predicted to earn the award.
As the night progressed, the award was given to Matthew Rhys for his performance in The Beast in Me. According to the Television Academy, Rhys made history that evening by becoming the first performer to win two lead Emmys in a single night after receiving Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay.
Isaac’s loss was a shock not just because he missed out on the award, but because when his performance was compared with that of the other contenders, it seemed he was robbed of his rightful recognition that night.
The Results of the Other Categories
Across the many categories at the 2026 Emmys, 17 actors and actresses of color were nominated. Notable nominees include Sterling K. Brown for Paradise; Zendaya and Chase Infiniti, both nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama; and Quinta Brunson and Ayo Edebiri, who were nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy. Riz Ahmed was a nominee as well, competing against Isaac for the award they both eventually lost out on.
There were many other nominated non-white performers, including Colman Domingo, Janelle James, Jessica Williams, Sepideh Moafi, and Carlos Manuel Vesga. Despite all these powerful, entertaining television roles, none of them won. While some people of color won Emmys during the Creative Arts ceremonies, viewers’ main concern was directed to the bigger, more prominent awards such as Lead Actor and Lead Actress, where diversity was scarce.
Hollywood vs. Representation
The disparity became significantly noticeable when racial diversity among the nominees had declined from the previous year. According to Variety, the 17 performers of color represented a 39% decrease from 28 the year prior. While the winners earned their awards and their performances weren’t meant to be diminished in light of speculation, the questions that arise go beyond a simple award and category.
Over the past decade, there have been many discussions about Hollywood and how it represents minority groups. Additionally, these results show a darker reality, considering the current state of the political climate, where there has been more racial bias than before in recent times.
Television should provide a space for performers and stories regardless of their background. The system responsible for recognizing these talents should be investigated when the industry decides who deserves the award and who doesn’t. Isaac losing the award as an isolated event may be considered an unlucky moment in his career, but combined with the other 11 categories that also failed to recognize actors of color, it’s hard not to raise eyebrows and search for a deeper meaning behind this.
For an industry that continues to emphasize the importance of representation, it seems there is still a long road ahead. The 2026 Emmy Awards stand out as a defining moment in entertainment history that proves this.
