There were so many funny, interesting, shocking moments on TikTok in 2020 that were some of the best times to be on the app. I was about 13 or 14 in 2019 – 2020 when I first got TikTok and that was the year Covid happened as well.
I genuinely feel like the app has changed a lot since then and I’m sure plenty of other people can agree. This is due to the trends, dances, influencers and how it was so much more colorful than it seems now on the app. The app today has some pretty interesting vibes then it did but also a completely different year than it was in 2020 and It’s pretty clear an app wouldn’t stay the same all the time. I mean sure the app is still popular and has fun trends as well as creative people on the app but in 2019 – 2020 it was completely different.
To say it was different back then to now would be due to the lockdown, people becoming famous for literally anything, the hype house, Hollywood fix clips, dancing to Bored in the house and the tootsie slide, say so, savage remix and mood audios/songs that were all people made videos to or about. Different challenges made by creators really set it off and made the app the way it is with the way they weren’t afraid to be themselves and have fun. There were some critics on the app like every social media app has, but it was still so interesting seeing so many different people get famous due to dancing just once or due to something else.
The dance called the renegade, watching TikTok compilations, alt TikTok, etc. There were so many iconic moments on the app that was fun to experience and see during that time. So, as TikTok evolved it got more and more popular and soon pretty much everyone was on the app. Pretty much everyone thought that they were going to become famous due to how it seemed online. With the hype house it was nothing but drama, cheating allegations, fallouts and the backlash they had over partying during covid 19. Which is insane to think about because it was a time where people were getting sick and it was spreading quickly back then.
There were influencers who wore a clear mask or anything to put over their faces knowing it didn’t protect them from anything that was in the air. This was what many people talked about for a while which honestly makes sense and makes it seem like they didn’t care at all. Now with everything else going on at that time the hype house and sway house were pretty big and with influencers like Charlie D’amelio and Addison Rae and so many more. Not to mention that Alternative TikTok (alt) was where most people got their style or were trying out a new style. It wasn’t just by wearing black and white clothes it was the saturation on videos, colorful hair, cool transitions on videos and long colorful socks and hand gloves.
The indie aesthetic was something I did enjoy seeing from the colorful beads, saturation, super vibrant photos and I know for some reason everyone who was indie always had the monster energy drink and hot Cheetos. That was like in every photo they took, and the picture was super colorful, and it was pretty interesting seeing different aesthetics. With creators like rhegan777 she made transitions on the app and people wondered how she did that and it became so popular on the app that many other creators started to do it too, but hers was really cool since it was always different every video. In 2020, TikTok had so many different fun, iconic and shocking moments that made TikTok the way it is today. Now we have more of those same trends like with clothing, TikTok dances and audios, and so much more and it really was a fun time and also chaotic around that era of TikTok.
