Why Succession on HBOMax is My Favorite Show Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

As an avid TV show and movie lover, I am always looking for new things to watch. I love keeping up with the shows especially those that win awards and are recognized in the media. Recently I have watched the show Succession on HBO, and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while!

It follows a family-owned business and the trials and tribulations that Logan Roy, the president of the company, constantly faces with his children regarding how the company should be run. At first, I didn’t think I would enjoy this show because it is so far from my typical interests… but I remembered the show won an award at the Golden Globes, so I decided to give it a shot.

The show is so intense and just when you think you know what is going on, the plot finds some way to thicken. I also really liked how the show portrays family-owned business relations and how dysfunctional the Roy family is. Every character contributes something different to the show that makes it work well and is different than your typical cast. The show is satirical/drama and provides more comedic relief than I expected; in my opinion, cousin Greg is one of the funniest characters on the show. My favorite part about the show would probably be how the director does well making the family seem so disconnected from reality, and shows us the side we don’t see of money, power, and fame.

It’s a bummer that Season 3 of the show has been a bit delayed due to Covid, however I can’t wait to see what’s to come for the Roy family in Season 3. I recommend this show to someone who likes shows that unfold slowly and who are looking for a show with good storytelling! If you like shows like Ozark (my other favorite show), then you will probably like succession as well.
