Comparison is the thief of joy: Why it is okay to not have all figured out

In the age of social media, it’s so easy to lose track of time and to get so absorbed in other people’s lives. That makes it even easier to lose yourself in general and begin to compare yourself to other people.

Being a college senior doesn’t make it any easier. You hear about the achievements of your peers or the plans they have for the future, and you think, “What am I even doing?”

That has become my whole mindset this semester. I have so many people coming up to me and asking me about my plans for post-graduate life. “Where are you going next?” or “Have you sent in any applications?” And the answer is always no.

Sometimes you just don’t know, and social media doesn’t make it any easier. I find myself scrolling and seeing all the great things my peers are doing and just feeling inadequate. I question why I am not doing anything with my life or sometimes just feel the urge to not even try at all.

I say all this to say it’s okay to not know what your next move is. Not everyone can have everything figured out and planned so perfectly. Some (like me) take a little longer, and it can be for many reasons. What if you pick this path and regret it, or what if you want to work instead of diving back into school all over again?

Whatever the reason may be, just know you’re not alone and that everything is going to be okay. We’re all living life for the first time, and being overly critical about yourself or comparing won’t help. Just stay focused and continue to try because even if you fail, at least you tried.

I'm a first gen-American who has always been into reading and writing for as long as I can remember. I want to be able to express myself and share my thoughts in a way that connects with others as well. I enjoy cooking, writing(of course), reading and just being able to create in general. I major in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in creative writing. That path I feel really shows my personality and who I am.
