We have had a generational run of insane pop music the past few years, ranging from elite Taylor Swift albums to the more recent Chuck Timely by Role Model. The 2020s have been incredible years for Harry Styles, Gracie Abrams, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and SO many more. Us insufferable fan girls are nothing short of fed as of late, and honestly I think people are irritated by it.
I see so much hate online, whether it be on TikTok or Twitter (because I am NOT calling it X), everyone seems to have something negative to say about these upbeat tunes that are being released, and the people who listen to them. Music is supposed to make us feel good, why are we hating on it?
While I know some artists can produce music that is not ‘as good’ as their other records or singles in certain discographies, it is so crucial to understand that everyone has their own specific music taste, and not everyone is going to agree with it.
BUT: you don’t always need to comment on it… If you don’t like a specific song or a specific artist, maybe keep it to yourself. I know for me personally, I love an upbeat, vibe-y album that I can put on in the car during a long drive, or a deep-cut tune I can blast in my earbuds while I clean my room. It honestly keeps me going, and I know for a lot of other people it is the same. No, I don’t always vibe with whatever Drake or Don Toliver is on the radio, but I can respect the fact that other people enjoy their music, because art is art!
I feel as though it is almost comparable to certain foods. We consume music (at least I do) like we eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Obviously I don’t always have the same preference for dinner as my other friends do, sometimes we all choose different things, similar to how we all have different playlists and liked songs on Apple Music or Spotify.
Generally speaking, hating pop music does not make you edgy. It never has, and quite frankly it never will. The obsession with having to know some underground, completely unknown artist or band is completely ridiculous, and honestly it’s not realistic. Going off of that, we also really have no need for gatekeeping artists either! If I like a song, I love to share it with my friends and let them decide if they love it or hate it, and guess what? Whatever their opinion might be, I am completely okay with it. It’s my music taste, it’s my current favorite song, why should I care what they think? The greatness of a song or album or artist is that they pertain to certain types of people, and whoever can enjoy it wherever or whenever!
Mainstream music and media will always exist, people will always have their personal taste, and that has to be respected! Being your own unique self is what makes life fun. In the way you dress and act, how you express yourself, what hobbies you choose to partake in, that is all what creates you! Let yourself and your peers enjoy and move through life the way they want to!
Now, go listen to something that makes YOU happy, because who even cares what anyone else thinks. Pop music is cool.
