On Sep. 8, 2026, Meta — Facebook and Instagram’s parent company — officially launched its new AI agent, Meta Muse. Since then, Instagram users have found themselves bombarded with prompts to use the AI as their new desktop companion. And while some have jumped at the chance to start using this new tool, others have questions. For starters, what even is Meta Muse?
Muse works like other AI chatbots, like ChatGPT or Claude To use Muse, users will need to either open the Muse desktop browser or download the app onto their phone. From there, they simply enter their prompt and wait for the AI’s response.Â
According to Meta, though, Muse is more of a desktop assistant than other chatbots. “Once a person shares a goal with Muse, it helps them develop a personalized plan and coordinate their time and resources, then advances the work on its own,” Meta shared in its official launch report. “It can open a browser, fill out forms, and negotiate on their behalf.” Â
Even after the app or browser is closed, Muse will continue to work and update the user with its findings. But it stands to reason that these features don’t come cheap — or at least, don’t come free. Although creating a Muse account is free — and there’s a free tier for using it! — there are plenty of paid subscription tiers, too. Here’s what to expect.
Free Tier
The most basic Muse plan is the free tier which gives you 1 million input tokens — the term for data including words and punctuation — weekly, according to a Threads announcement from Mark Zuckerberg. If you reach the limit of this plan, you can either upgrade to a paid tier, or wait for the weekly refresh to begin browsing for free again.Â
Alternatively, for some AI services like search inquiries, processing, and image generation, you can pay per use for a rate of roughly $0.002 to $0.18 depending on the request and the time it takes to complete. A full pricing breakdown can be found on the Meta Model API website. Â
And, before you feel like you have to upgrade, be aware that all Muse features are available at all tiers. So, there are no capabilities locked behind paywalls — it’s just a matter of how much you’ll be able to use them.Â
Power Plan
If the free tier isn’t enough, you can upgrade to the Power Plan, which will cost you $20 a month. With this subscription, you’ll have access to 500 million input tokens per week.
Maximum Plan
Finally, for those needing a lot of input tokens, there’s the Maximum Plan. The highest tier of the Muse subscription, the Maximum plan gives users 3 billion input tokens a week for $100 a month.Â
