In the current pop-culture landscape, sports romance has been completely taking over our timelines (in the best way), especially in the world of TV & Books Shows like Heated Rivalry, Off Campus, and Finding Her Edge have taken off, and even more sports romance media is coming our way. These types of shows have proven to be exactly what Gen Z is looking for when it comes to romance TV, and Crave’s new series Slo Pitch is no different! The show absolutely blew my mind with just one single episode, and if you’re a lover of sports, romance, comedy, and female media, it will definitely blow you away too!

HOW SLO PITCH CAME TO OUR SCREENS

From the production company of Heated Rivalry comes an all-new queer sports comedy, Slo Pitch. The show is a 10-episode mockumentary Crave original series that follows The Public Lass Brovaries, a Queer softball team trying to make its way through Mississauga’s Slo-Pitch League! The show originally began as a web series in 2021 and then made its way to being a full-length television production, co-produced by Elliot Page’s Pageboy Productions.

The series had its two-episode premiere on sept 25 and will continue to release new episodes every Friday. The show stars Canadian actress Jess Salgueiro as coach Joanne Pico, as well as Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire playing her rival and ex-girlfriend, Leanne. The show features a hilarious ensemble cast and also perfectly encapsulates Canadian culture.

THE PILOT

As a lover of pilot episodes, Slo Pitch does an amazing job of showing fans exactly what they’re in for. The season opens with comedy, drama, and romance, which is, as we all know, the perfect combo for a great TV show. The episode introduces us to Joanne, the head coach and the budding drama between her ex-girlfriend and rival Leanne. This is the central conflict of the pilot, as Joanne has recently been dumped by Leanne, and when Leanne joins a rival team in the same league, their breakup turns into a full-blown softball rivalry. On top of that, the series is perfect for lovers of the found family trope, as the series is completely focused on the lives and shenanigans of The Brovaries. They’re not only a team, but a group of best friends and misfits who found solace in playing recreational ball.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

It’s no secret that friendship comedies with Queer female ensemble casts are a rarity, especially within the sports romance category. Slo Pitch proves that representation matters in our real lives and just as much on our screens. The diversity of the characters highlights the show’s mission to showcase the versatility of women and the importance of intentional representation. Plus, I’d say this Slo Pitch is proving that Canadian TV has never been more in the spotlight.

IF THIS CONVINCED YOU…

I would highly recommend adding Slo Pitch to your watchlist! The show is not only a great vibe but an insanely hilarious watch that will most certainly brighten your day.
