With football season taking over tech, the question of what to wear to each game is on many people’s minds, including mine. While I know this is a very first-world problem, a cute game-day fit can make the day feel even better. From cute pictures with your friends to cheering from the stands, your outfit is a part of the experience. Game days can easily turn into an all-day/night event, so feeling comfortable and cute in your outfit is key to a successful and enjoyable game day.Â
Over the years, football fashion has evolved beyond simply throwing on a school T-shirt or jersey. Now, today’s game day styles are about finding ways to show team spirit while simultaneously expressing your personal style. Yet, you don’t need a brand-new outfit for every game day, and you definitely don’t need an outfit plastered with a school logo all over. Personally, I think some of the cutest game day outfits come from basic pieces mixed with small pins or pops of color that show your team spirit.Â
I usually start with basics, something I feel good and comfortable in. A denim skirt or my favorite jeans and a comfy tank is my go-to. Then, I build it from there. Add orange, maroon, and white ribbons to my hair, add some buttons to my outfit, and suddenly I feel cute and am repping my school’s colors. You don’t have to spend loads of money on a gameday fit to look cute and match the theme of a game. The simplest aspects of your outfit can be the perfect statement to show your school pride and look cute doing it.Â
So, I have two pieces of advice for your next game day fit.Â
First, shop in your own closet before you go out and spend money on a new one. Before deciding you have nothing to wear, pull out anything you own in your school colors and start experimenting. Your favorite white top? Try adding some accessories and go from there. An oversized maroon sweater you normally wear to class? Pair it with a skirt, ribbons, and sneakers. You would be surprised how many cute gameday outfits are already hiding in your closet.Â
My second piece of advice is: dress for the actual day you’re going to have, not just the picture you want to take before it. Trust me, I know how tempting it can be to plan your outfit around how good it will look in pictures. Yet, it’s important to remember you actually have to spend the whole day and maybe the night in it. A football Saturday can mean walking across campus, standing at a tailgate for hours, climbing stadium stairs, jumping around in the student section, and potentially going somewhere after the game. An outfit that looks adorable in the mirror might not feel so adorable six hours later. So, plan: don’t wear the cute boots if they will give you blisters, and when temperatures start dropping, bring the jacket.
The whole point of a game day is to have fun. So don’t stress too much about having the “perfect” outfit. Wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. At the end of the day, no one is going to remember whether you wore the newest game-day top or spent hours planning your outfit. You’ll remember the pictures with your friends, the tailgates, jumping around in the student section, and hopefully watching the Hokies win.
