Girls
Platform: HBO
One of the funniest, most chaotic and most heartfelt shows I’ve ever seen. It follows a group of girls fresh out of college as they navigate New York City, relationships, drama and more. These characters are relatable and outrageous. It shows you don’t need to have everything figured out. College is the best time to indulge in this 6-season masterpiece.
Adults
Platform: Hulu
Another incredibly funny piece. This show also follows a friend group of 20-year-olds in New York City, the best place to be in your 20s, apparently. This friend group explores sexuality, drama and financial struggles. With intense relationship drama and insane side quests, it shows us the power of friendship. After all, where would we be without the friends we make in college?
I Love LA
Platform: HBO
Straying away, but not far, from New York, I Love LA is a beautiful piece of work. It tells the story of a girl who wants to be an agent for upcoming stars in Los Angeles. She is surprised by her ex-best friend from, you’ll never guess, New York. They get thrown into the world of fame, gossip, scandal and love. It’s an absolute must-watch.
New GirlÂ
Platform: Hulu
New Girl is another LA classic. One of the best sitcoms I’ve ever seen, especially as an education major. The main character is a quirky teacher who finds herself living with three men, who she assumed were girls on their Craigslist ad. Each of the guys has their own goofy traits. Another great story of love and friendship.Â
Overcompensating
Platform: Amazon Prime
This show was truly life-changing. It explores so many important concepts while being satirical and funny. It follows a freshman in college as he struggles with his homosexuality and his best girlfriend, who helps him pick up guys. This duo is absolutely hilarious, and their relationship is so special, beautiful and heart-wrenching. This is an incredible story, especially for incoming freshmen learning how to navigate their first year.
Sex and the City
Platform: HBO
Finally, the most iconic show of all time. While the characters are in their 30s, every girl goes through finding the one. College is the time when we begin looking for love in a lot of different places. Some aren’t the best, so we must learn from the lovely ladies of Sex and the City. This show explores so much and truly helps the frontal lobe form; at least it helped mine.Â
These are all shows that helped me through my underclassman years in college. Without them, I wouldn’t have my understanding of romantic and platonic relationships. They help explore and navigate life from a funny point of view. I know from experience how life can change once you leave home. Sometimes we need someone who shares our problems, even if they are on our screens.
