Looking for some fall outfit inspiration? You might want to take a trip back to the 2000s.

Y2K style — aka a fashion aesthetic inspired by the late 1990s and early 2000s, with its love for oversized sunglasses, chic matching sets, low-rise pants, capris, and camo print — has been back for a couple of years now, but I would argue it’s currently bigger than ever.

Think of the effortlessly cool, ultra-feminine outfits worn by characters in Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, and Clueless. The era was all about having fun with fashion and putting together outfits that felt both casual and put-together. And with so many of these trends popping up on TikTok, Pinterest, and Instagram, it’s easier than ever to find inspiration for bringing a little early-2000s nostalgia into your everyday wardrobe.

Whether you want to fully embrace the throwback aesthetic or just incorporate a few nostalgic accessories into your usual outfits, here are some Y2K-inspired trends to try this fall.

Camo Is Back

If there’s one print that screams early 2000s, it’s camouflage. Once a staple of the era’s streetwear scene, camo is finding its way back into everyday outfits, from cargo pants to graphic tees.

The best part is you don’t have to go all out to try the trend. A camo tee or tank paired with your favorite jeans or a simple skirt is an easy way to add a little Y2K flair to your outfit. For some inspiration, check out Aéropostale’s collaboration with Von Dutch. The collection has more than 30 pieces that all lean into the logo-heavy aesthetic of the 2000s. I have the camo graphic baby tee, and it’s a great option for anyone looking to experiment with the print without committing to a full camo outfit.

Matching Sets Make Everything Easier

Some mornings, putting together an outfit feels like a task in itself. Enter matching sets: a simple way to look put-together without spending 20 minutes deciding what goes with what. Think coordinated sweatpants and zip-up hoodies, fitted tops with matching bottoms, or comfortable lounge sets that can take you from a morning lecture to a coffee run.

Matching sets also fit right in with the nostalgic, casual side of Y2K fashion. Brands like Brandy Melville and Juicy Couture offer plenty of inspiration for coordinated, laid-back looks. Add sneakers, a shoulder bag, or a pair of chunky sunglasses to really make the outfit your own.

Bring Back the Low-Rise Silhouette

Love it or hate it, low-rise bottoms are another unmistakable throwback. If you’re ready to revisit the trend, try styling low-rise pants with a fitted baby tee, a cropped tank, or an oversized sweatshirt. Playing with proportions can help the look feel intentional rather than like a direct copy of an outfit from 2002.

I love my American Eagle low-rise jeans, but you can find a good pair anywhere — I’ve even found some great low-rise jeans while out thrifting. The baggier and more ripped, the better.

Make a Statement With Graphic Tops

Graphic tees and tanks are another easy way to bring some Y2K personality into your fall wardrobe. A statement top can do most of the work in an outfit, making it easy to pair with any bottoms or accessories.

For a casual daytime look, wear a graphic baby tee with loose-fitting jeans and sneakers. If you’re heading out in the evening, swap the sneakers for boots and add a couple statement accessories. If you really want to lean into the early-2000s aesthetic, a top with rhinestones or other bedazzling adds a little sparkle and fun to any fit. As temperatures drop, throw on a zip-up hoodie or cardigan to keep the look ready for fall.

Accessorize Like It’s the 2000s

Oversized sunglasses, shoulder bags, chunky belts, and colorful hair accessories can give even the simplest outfit a Y2K-inspired twist.

Make sure to choose accessories that complement your outfit instead of feeling like you’re attempting to wear every trend at once. Pair oversized sunglasses with a matching set, or add a statement belt to your favorite jeans and baby tee. You can also experiment with layering jewelry or adding a colorful accessory to break up a neutral outfit.
