Bringing a chapter to an end is difficult. Ending a cycle as significant as leaving college is even harder. To make it a lot easier, nothing is more fair than living the last few months left in the best way possible.
Following the steps below, you’ll avoid some mistakes usually committed and make sure your final months are memorable.
1. Turn memories into pages
A different way to eternalize the memories of a senior year is definitely not sticking into the digital world. Quite the opposite, a fun alternative is to bring it with your own personality. But how to do that?
Scrapbooking and journaling practices have been really trending and been commented on lately. Both are a way to express yourself, practice creativity and, specially, keep memories alive. All you need is a notebook, fun stickers, printed pictures and some glue. Do it with friends, in your free time and every time a significant event happens that year/semester.
Like that, you’ll be thankful for having something to feel nostalgic about – Which books were you reading back then? Which parties and bars you frequented?
Stick up tickets, print photos, attach Polaroids to the pages and the most important: just have fun!
2. Don’t make yourself suffer from fomo
It’s the last year. Why not celebrate at the Uni parties and games? Don’t be left out.
Of course, that’s a tough year – a lot of emotions and things to worry about, besides the amount of paperwork to resolve. But, being in college also means enjoying both experiences at the same time. An exclusive thing at that part of life is justly partying, drinking and going out with friends.
So make sure you’re not losing it – go to every party, every college game and every bar. Cheer and vibrate for the Athletic and register everything.
3. Change your opinion about someone
Every place has someone that we don’t like or actually never had the chance to talk with – maybe a professor, a classmate or a person you see in the hall daily but don’t even know the name of.
Now, there’s a challenge: change your opinion about that certain someone. It’s difficult, but a different and fun thing to do before saying goodbye. Pick a person that comes to your mind, and stick into it for the whole year. Put in mind that you’re not graduating until that is a different figure to you.
Is there a person you’ve had a disagreement with in the past? Go resolve that, clear up your side or just be nice and kind to them. Someone you think is stylish? Go say that. It doesn’t need to be fast, unnatural or forced – take time, take it slow and a step at a time.
By the end of the year, if that goal is complete, maybe you’ll have a new friend… or, just the free mind that at least you tried.
We never know when we will need someone’s help in the future, even after college – a classmate with contacts that works in the same area as you do and a professor that can recommend your name. A changed opinion about these people doesn’t bite in these situations, right?
4. Have a Ferris Bueller’s day off style of day
That’s a really seductive topic. Who doesn’t like a day off? But, in that list, a day off is the last thing you’ll have.
Take friends and decide a subject where there’s no problem with missing class: no tests, no important topics (on that specific day) and no accumulated absences. Then, do a script of what to do some days before, so nothing goes wrong. The idea is to do the amount of things you can possibly do.
Some ideas are to do a free-test class of something the group never did – could be a dance class, pottery, painting and so many other things. Eat at a restaurant near the college that the group never entered. Add museums, theaters and cinemas on the script so the day off can be more fun. Go to bars using wigs or different outfits without being embarrassed. Make sure of capturing everything, so these stories can be told in the future.
But why not do that on the weekend or holidays? Because the actual fun and spirit of this idea is to have that memory and story to tell. Remember when we skipped class in our last year and did everything we could? – that’s a core memory that everyone should have, if it was executed properly and with responsibility.
5. Participate in the bts of college events
Lectures, exclusive events and charity programs are always on the college schedule. Some of them open the opportunity to volunteer, helping on the behind the scenes of the program. Instead of just listening, understanding how these events work and how they are planned is an interesting thing to do, that not everyone has the experience or chance to be a part of.
Besides that being a great thing to put on a resume, is, the most important of all, a lesson learned. You can be a staff person, the receptionist or even a promoter.
For that to be executed, it is important to be eyes opened on the University website and talk to the superiors that may help you. Most of the time, these opportunities come to those who are the most attentive and shameless.
6. Do your own list
Every person has their own personal objectives. So, last but not least, make your own list of things you want to do before saying goodbye, with personal and exclusive goals.
Make it up with a specific person, reach that “A” in a subject that you have the most difficulty in, learn something new, create a blog with everything you learned in these years of college and share your knowledge – with a list, the last few months left feel more attractive and encourage you to be left out of the comfort zone.
Don’t be sad if you couldn’t achieve every topic, because the middle idea of having a things to do list is to have the best and most memorable time, doing different things and enjoying every part of the senior year, that can be both hard and really nostalgic. The actual point of doing it, is to look back in the future and think to yourself that that was a great year, and maybe the perfect close of your last days of not being an adult in the professional market.
So stick into it (but not too hard), and just allow yourself to have fun. Make this farewell have your personality and don’t forget: these are the times of our lives.
