With the release of her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, and her inaugural music festival, Daisy Chain Fields, just around the corner, we’re in the midst of an Olivia Rodrigo summer. But perhaps the most exciting thing Rodrigo is bringing to the table right now? Her activism.
Currently, Rodrigo is going all out on social media in support of reproductive rights, partnering with the Center for Reproductive Rights and Planned Parenthood — both of which are beneficiaries of Daisy Chain Fields, which features a women-only lineup along with all net proceeds going toward nonprofits advocating for women and girls. On July 21, the Center for Reproductive Rights released a series of videos with Rodrigo discussing the importance of reproductive healthcare, in which Rodrigo called pro-life laws “pro-control.” On Aug. 4, Rodrigo made a video with Planned Parenthood commenting on the fact that 30 Planned Parenthood health centers have shut down, specifically calling out President Donald Trump for signing a law to defund them.
Rodrigo is a longtime, vocal advocate for repro rights for years. She launched her own global initiative to support nonprofits focused on reproductive freedom, education, and ending gender-based violence during her GUTS World Tour called Fund 4 Good, and continues to donate both concert and festival proceeds to support access to reproductive healthcare. Rodrigo is also no stranger to speaking out against the Trump administration and those associated with it. In an interview with Variety on June 4, Rodrigo called ICE’s actions “awful, barbaric, and cruel” after finding out Trump’s Department of Homeland Security was using her song “all-american bitch” in celebration of ICE deportations. (The audio was removed from the video after she condemned it as “racist, hateful propaganda” in an Instagram comment.) Further, back in 2024, the Trump administration used her song “deja vu” in a video after he won the election, to which Rodrigo replied, “ew don’t use my sound ever again ty.” The audio was removed from that video as well.
Rodrigo’s activism, and her use of her platform to share her beliefs, is inspiring — and unfortunately, not as common among her famous peers. Many celebrities act as if it’s enough to say “go vote!” whenever elections come around, but it’s not. As people with millions of followers and millions of dollars, it’s ignorant to pretend celebrities hold no influence over the public. While I’m not saying everyone needs to base their opinions and beliefs based on what your top Spotify artist from last year thinks, if someone has the ability to speak to millions of people whenever they feel the need to, why not use that platform for activism?
Rodrigo has always been clear on where she stands, and has created a framework for activism that other celebs need to follow. It’s a privilege to have a large platform and influence — it’s about time others in the limelight follow in Rodrigo’s footsteps and start using that for good.
