The Blokette Aesthetic Has Never Been More Back, Thanks To The World Cup

It’s the summer of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the style of the sport has made its way onto college campuses — namely, the blokette aesthetic. A mix of sporty essentials paired with girly motifs, the blokette style is the go-to for fashion girlies at the forefront of style. As Sophia Basile, a senior at Syracuse University, points out, “I’ve seen a lot of people wearing [blokette] or a style adjacent to it, especially with ballet flats being so popular now. People are pairing them with … jorts or jerseys.” Massa Traboulsi, a junior at Southern Connecticut State University, agrees, saying, “I’ve seen a wave of women at my university embracing the trend. I think there’s just something so creative about mixing aesthetics to show team pride when people wear their school jerseys with the style.”

The blokette aesthetic is all about mixing the traditionally masculine with traditionally feminine to create a chic look. It’s perfect for people who want to embrace sports but aren’t actually playing them — and on the other side of the coin, it’s a great way for student athletes to feminize their uniforms with a well-placed bow or ribbon. With the World Cup and soccer taking over this summer, blokette is back, and it’s better than ever.

What Is The Blokette Aesthetic?

The term blokette blends the word “bloke,” which is typically used in British slang to casually refer to a guy, and the word “coquette,” the viral, ultra-feminine style aesthetic that blew up on TikTok in 2020. Blokette style got its name in 2022, coined by Nymphet Alumni podcast host Alex Alario. She told Coveteur in 2023, “I came up with this term in October of last year when we began noticing fashion girls styling vintage sportswear, especially Adidas, in really whimsical and girly ways, spearheaded by perennial trendsetter Bella Hadid.” Alario noted she started seeing girls dress in the trend right before the 2022 World Cup, so it checks out that it’s having a resurgence now.

Bella Hadid, being one of the biggest style icons of today, helped bring blokette style into the limelight with many of her street style looks, pairing skirts and feminine purses with sneakers and crew necks. Additionally, like any 2020s fashion trend, it’s a big reference to the ’90s and early 2000s, when rock stars were rocking the more “blokey,” sporty side of the look. Then, of course, there’s the ultrafeminine coquette side — the aesthetic that absolutely exploded in 2023 and has been a fashion mainstay ever since. Blokette is one of the many branches of this style.

Brands on The Blokette Bandwagon

Now, with the World Cup upon us, everyone’s wearing their favorite team’s jerseys, so it’s only natural that the blokette style would re-emerge — especially since brands are taking advantage of all the hype surrounding the tournament. Additionally, a lot of brands taking advantage of this trend — like Free People or Levi’s — make everyday pieces rather than activewear, which creates a new space in the market for sporty street wear. That helps these items fit right into the blokette style.

A ton of brands are diving head-first into this trend. Leaning more towards everyday pieces, brands like Free People have their Game Day Essentials, Aerie has a FWC26 collection, Urban Outfitters is introducing their Urban Outfitter Football Club with an array of blokette clothing items and accessories, and Levi’s has their international soccer tees for those looking for an oversized shirt or baby tee. Traditional athletic brands like Puma, Adidas, and Nike are participating in the aesthetic, too, with team kits and jerseys.

The key to dressing in the blokette style is to take any of these sporty items — whether it’s a jersey, a pair of Adidas Sambas, or some track pants — and dress them up with more romantic motifs, like bows or lace.

“I’ve definitely seen people on campus lean into more sporty blokette styles. It’s a really fun way to look both sporty and feminine while being comfy at the same time,” says Marianna Orozco, a senior at Emerson College. “The jersey and skirt combo is truly top tier. I personally don’t really enjoy wearing sporty stuff, but with the World Cup here, I’ve been finding ways to incorporate my Colombia jersey into my more feminine style.”
