Summer typically means endless beach days and picnics in the park — or, at the very least, some much-needed time to relax and recharge. But one of the most underrated parts of summer has got to be back-to-school shopping. Of course, this comes with getting the necessary school supplies and books (which is exciting in its own right), but the fashion is where it’s really at. I mean, there is truly no better feeling than returning to campus in the fall with a revitalized look. After all: new year, new you.
But what should you actually be looking for when you go back-to-school shopping this summer? If that question is stressing you out, don’t worry. In April 2026, Her Campus surveyed over 350 Gen Zers about all things back-to-college — including all of the new fashion trends you’ll inevitably see across campus this school year — so you can be on trend and ahead of the curve for the fall semester.
According to our respondents, this upcoming school year is all about leveling up the clean-girl look and the effortlessly chic aesthetics we all know and love (matching sets and the old money aesthetic are in this year), while incorporating more feminine and whimsical elements, like babydoll tops and sheer fabrics.
With that in mind, check out the list below for potential swaps you can make this semester to level up your style when going to class this school year.
BDG Cindy Shoulder Bag ($70)
Tote bags will always be a staple, and this year, 72% of survey respondents said they’re the go-to bag to use as a book bag. If you’re into a more mature look this semester, a vintage-inspired tote is where it’s at. This one from Urban Outfitters is edgy enough to stand out, but still simple enough to wear day to day. Plus, the various pockets will help you organize your class staples instead of dealing with the free-for-all that is a pocketless tote.
Madewell Mixed-Metal Triple-Ring Hoop Earrings ($58)
If you’re a hoop earring kind of gal, you’re not alone — 87% of our survey respondents said hoops are in this year. But if you want to take your style up a notch from your standard hoop, consider this fun mixed-metal option from Madewell. Whether you’re going for an old-money look or leaning into your whimsical side, these are sure to complement any outfit. Plus, they will literally never go out of style, so you don’t have to worry about being behind the trends next year.
Old Navy Ruffled Crew Sock 3-Pack ($13)
Outfits are built from the smallest of details, including socks. While it’s still important to have plain socks for the sake of utility, buying a few pairs of ruffled socks is the easiest way to add a little whimsy to your look, and elevate any outfit from simple to adorable.
Hollister Sweetheart Peplum Top ($25)
Babydoll tops are all the rage right now, and for good reason. They’re structured and have a good amount of coverage, but still feel feminine and fun. Plus, you can easily transition a top like this into post-grad life, making it all the more worthwhile.
Aritzia cozy sweatfleece sweatshirt ($78) & Mini Short ($48)
If you love wearing sweats to class but want to feel a little bit more put-together, it’s time to invest in a cozy matching set. You can put in the least amount of effort necessary into planning your outfit and still look intentional. Plus, 93% of our survey respondents said matching sets are trending this school year.
CalzedonIa Floral Lace Tights ($27)
You can transform any outfit into a full-on fashion moment simply by swapping your plain black tights for a lacy, colorful pair. These burgundy lace tights from Calzedonia would pair perfectly with a little black dress and kitten heels, and are definitely worth buying if you want a fun statement piece to spice up an outfit.
RPZL Acetate Polka Dot Claw Clip ($26)
Claw clips are an essential for when you just need to throw your hair up and call it a day. You can easily dress your look up by adding some claw clips into your rotation. While you can’t go wrong with any cute clip, this polka dot option is right on trend for fall 2026, and perfectly suited for those wanting to look effortlessly elegant.
LucettaCharms Gold Italian Charm Watch Bracelet ($40)
One of the best ways to step up your fashion game is by upgrading your jewelry. Consider switching your trusty Apple Watch to one of these adorable charm watches; any outfit you pair it with will immediately look more personalized and sophisticated. Bonus points if you pair it with some mixed metal bracelets, which, according to our survey, are very in for fall 2026.
