I started watching the hit 2000s dramedy Gilmore Girls about a month ago, and since then, it’s invaded my free time. The quick, witty pace of the show pleased my sense of humor. The actors research and devote themselves fully to their roles, and it pays off. The colorful character storylines that unfold over the show’s 7 seasons, drawing in millions of viewers and creating fans over the years. Even though I’m only through three seasons, I feel as if there’s already been so much wisdom I can take from the show and apply to my daily life and relationships. So far, these are the main takeaways I’ve gotten from becoming obsessed with Gilmore Girls.

First, enough coffee solves everything. Lorelai and Rory are nothing if not caffeinated. Seeing the mother-daughter duo pour through pots of coffee per episode always makes me crave the stuff, too. Whether it’s fueling Rory’s most recent late night study session or helping brew up drama at Luke’s, coffee is an essential part of life to the Gilmore girls. A main lesson that I’ve learned, revolving coffee of course, is that if you have a problem, you can work through it with perseverance. Even when the biggest dilemmas pile up, sometimes all you need is to sit down with a fresh cup of coffee, take a breath, and then work past anything.

Secondly, people are parents, too. Lorelai’s teenage pregnancy and close connection to Rory in age is interesting because it emphasizes the true friendship and companionship between the two. The age gap also allows for the audience to see into Lorelai’s sometimes-complicated personal life, which is something I found interesting. My mom and I have a fairly close relationship, and I think, as a child in a parent-child relationship, it can be hard to humanize a

parent and realize they have a life, too. By showcasing Lorelai’s personal life to the audience, the show examines Lorelai fully as a character, not only as a mom.

Lastly, the persistence of this mother-daughter duo has reminded me of one last thing: there’s always more than one right plan. Seen first with Lorelai’s teen pregnancy then with Rory’s eventual decision to attend Yale, the Gilmore girls are poster children for veering away from the plan. Adaptable and hardworking to a t, the pair refuses to let anything hold them back — even when things go awry. Instead, they teach each other, and the audience, that perseverance in the face of uncertainty is key.

In conclusion, the hit show Gilmore Girls isn’t just the dramedy missing from your life, but it’s also the perfect source for inspiration in tough times. Apart from all the life lessons I’ve taken from this show, it’s also made me laugh, cry, and stay up way too late. If you’re looking for the perfect 2000’s series to add to your life, I would definitely recommend Gilmore Girls. Hopefully, you’ll learn a few things, too.
