If you’re the type of person who counts down the days until Spotify Wrapped drops every December, Spotify just announced something that will hold you over for at least the next few months. To celebrate its 20th anniversary (yes, the music streaming app first hit the scene in April 2006), Spotify dropped Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s).
This feature is a new in-app experience that basically feels like Spotify Wrapped’s older, more emotional sibling. Instead of just recapping your past year of listening, this feature takes you all the way back to the beginning, revealing your entire history on the app. It’s a fun (and slightly humbling) look at how your music taste has evolved.
Available starting May 12, the experience can be accessed by searching “Spotify 20” or “Party of the Year(s)” in the mobile app. You can also visit spotify.com/20 on your phone’s web browser to find it. Once you get the party started, Spotify walks you through some of the most defining moments in your listening history.
Here’s everything to know about the Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s).
Your Spotify origin story
The experience begins by revealing your very first day on the platform. If you joined in middle school… well, prepare to confront that reality immediately. It also shows the total number of unique songs you’ve listened to since joining, which is probably much higher than whatever number you’re thinking in your head right now. (What do you mean I’ve listened to over 9,000 individual songs?!)
The song that started it all
Spotify also reveals the first song you ever streamed on the platform, putting you through a fun little guessing game before unveiling the answer. Regardless of whether it’s a nostalgic favorite you have on repeat to this day, or a forgotten freshman year anthem, the reveal is one of the most entertaining parts of the new feature.
The artist you always come back to
The app also shows your all-time most-streamed artist, along with how many minutes you’ve spent listening to them. Whether that result is completely expected or slightly embarrassing is another story — but that’s between you and Spotify.
At the end of the party, you unlock an All-Time Top Songs Playlist featuring your top 120 tracks, along with how many times each song was played, ready to save to your library. Spotify also includes themed stickers for the playlist and share cards for each stat, making it easy to post your results on social media or send them to friends. After all, as Spotify Wrapped has taught us, nothing brings people together (or creates competition) like music stats.
The listening party is available widely — across 140 regions worldwide and in 16 languages. As part of the anniversary celebration, Spotify’s editorial team also released global playlists highlighting the eras, trends, and cultural moments from the past two decades, which can be found in the hub on Spotify. The Spotify 20 landing page also opens up even more from the celebration, including a visual history of the platform and lists of the most-streamed music, podcasts, and audiobooks of all time.
So, happy 20th birthday, Spotify. You have proven time and time again that music isn’t just what we listen to — it’s a running timeline of who we are.
