As the school year comes to an end, I’m sure we’re all eagerly anticipating the freedom of summer. Whether you’re traveling to the city for an internship, visiting home for some relaxing time, or staying in Providence, one thing that we all need to do more of is head to the theater. There’s nothing quite like a movie theater side quest with a friend, significant other, or family, where you can just sit back with some popcorn, relax, and enjoy the show. No matter where you will be this summer, there’s a nice list of movies that can keep you entertained.
1. The Devil Wears Prada 2
This one is a personal favorite on this list. I had plans to head to the theater to watch it on its premiere day, May 1st, but realized I should probably use this reading period to actually study for my finals. Nevertheless, the original Devil Wears Prada from 2006 has become an iconic film for our generation, and I know a personal go-to for me. If you’re feeling bored, go type in The Devil Wears Prada on Google, and you can enjoy a red heel click across your screen. With an amazing cast of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and other icons, I hope this film doesn’t turn out to be one of those underwhelming sequels that we always see (cough, cough, Mean Girls, Enchanted, and plenty of others).
2. The Drama
Though this one has been out since the beginning of April, I still haven’t made it out to see it. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but a movie with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as leading roles is one that I know I just can’t pass up. Little me would be over the moon about the idea of Edward Cullen and KC Cooper/Rocky Blue (iykyk) coming together. My worlds colliding.
3. Project Hail Mary
This one I’m really excited about. I haven’t heard a single bad review from all of my close friends who have gone to see this film. It received a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and I always love a good space movie, especially one with Ryan Gosling.
4. Reminders of Him
As an avid reader and an avid BookTok reader too, one author that I’ve surprisingly never picked up is Colleen Hoover. I know her name evokes a plethora of emotions across people, but nevertheless, her 2022 novel Reminders of Him hit the big screen back in March. I honestly don’t know what to expect out of this one (I feel like films of this nature tend to be hit or miss), but when I found out my girl Lauren Graham, aka Lorelai Gilmore, is starring in it, I knew I had to go support.
5. Hoppers
Ok, this one is a guilty pleasure. I always love a wholesome Disney/Pixar animation film; I feel like it’s pretty hard for them to be truly bad. This one also received a high Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94%, and I could always use some cute talking animals on a big screen to brighten my day.
Even for those who aren’t the fondest of theaters, there’s nothing quite like curling up to a good movie. Good luck with the rest of finals season, and if you find yourself needing a break or looking for something to look forward to, turn to these movies!
