Formula 1’s youngest championship leader, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has won two races in a row at just 19 years old, in only his second season in the sport. But the Italian driver had already stood out long before his first victory; in 2024, at just 17, he was promoted by Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team from FRECA (Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine) directly to Formula 2, skipping Formula 3 altogether.
Born in Bologna, Italy, Kimi’s motorsport career began at 15, when he joined the Mercedes Junior Programme. He quickly gained recognition, being considered one of the sport’s most promising young talents. In 2019, he won two titles in the OK (Original Kart) Junior category — the WSK Euro Series and the Super Master Series — and, the following year, claimed the FIA Karting European Championship.
In 2021, while still competing in karting, Antonelli won the European Championship once again — a crucial milestone that helped him transition to single-seater racing, making his debut in the final three rounds of Formula 4 later that year. In 2022, he secured a full-time seat in the category with Prema Racing.
As an F4 driver, Kimi continued collecting titles, including the ADAC and Italian championships, as well as the Middle Eastern Series and FRECA. Already considered a prodigy, he consistently accumulated trophies and delivered standout performances race after race. In 2024, Mercedes made a bold and unconventional decision in his development: promoting him to F2, skipping what would traditionally be the next step, F3.
Kimi did not disappoint in Formula 2. After victories in Silverstone and Hungary, he became the youngest multiple race winner in the category’s history. When Lewis Hamilton announced his departure from Mercedes, Toto Wolff faced the challenge of replacing a seven-time world champion — and chose a bold path, promoting the rookie to fill the second seat.
Antonelli did not win the 2024 Formula 2 championship, but he impressed fans and critics alike with his talent and composure. Still, the public, the media and rival teams questioned how an 18-year-old would perform in such a high-pressure role within one of Formula 1’s most iconic teams.
In 2025, at the Canadian Grand Prix, Kimi secured his first F1 podium, finishing P3. In May, after taking pole position for the Miami Grand Prix Sprint, he became the youngest polesitter of any race format in Formula 1 history. Little did he — or anyone else — know that, by the second race of the 2026 season, he would break that record again, becoming the youngest Grand Prix polesitter, surpassing Sebastian Vettel.
After winning the Chinese Grand Prix, Kimi not only became the second-youngest race winner in Formula 1 history, but also the first Italian to win a race in 20 years. His performances in just his second season are remarkable to watch, rekindling excitement among fans around the world.
His biggest idol is the Brazilian racing legend Ayrton Senna, even though Antonelli never had the chance to watch him race — Senna passed away 12 years before Kimi was born. Many fans have pointed out similarities between the two, with some even calling Kimi a “reincarnation” of the Brazilian due to their physical resemblance.
Beyond appearances, there are also intriguing parallels in their careers: both raced under the number 12, both secured their first pole position and victory in the second race of their second F1 season, and both are known for their skill in wet conditions. While these may be coincidences, the similarities become even more compelling considering how much of an inspiration Senna has been to Antonelli.
Besides his evident talent and abilities behind the wheel, Kimi’s fresh personality is also one of the reasons he is so easy to admire. F1 fans see him as a Gen Z representative in the paddock, part of a new generation reshaping the sport’s image and energy. At just 19 years old, the Mercedes driver is already making history, combining record-breaking performances with a maturity that goes beyond his age.
He still has a long way to go, but the path he is tracing so far suggests something bigger than a promising start. Amid expectations, comparisons and the weight of a legendary team, Andrea Kimi Antonelli is proving he belongs at the top — not just as a rising talent, but as a defining name of Formula 1’s next era.
