In Another Life

Lizzy Harbold Student Contributor, St. Bonaventure University
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SBU chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

The whimsymaxxing trend has been getting to me. Though I’m in the last few weeks of my undergraduate career, I have been thinking passionately about an alternative job that would maximize my whimsy. Don’t get me wrong, I love accounting and I’m excited for my career, but when thinking about what I want to do, what comes to mind is ASMR content creation.

I am an avid consumer of ASMR, or autonomous sensory meridian response. ASMR content utilizes “triggers” to produce a relaxed reaction. It can reduce stress, improve mood, and aid sleep. My YouTube feed is entirely devoted to ASMR. Many people, including my boyfriend, sister, and parents, think this is incredibly weird, and I’m only posting this here because I want to know I’m not alone. It would be really embarrassing if I actually am alone and still published this of my own free will. Anyways…

I have the upmost respect and admiration for content creators. It takes so much time and effort to create a page with curated material, and I so badly want to attempt it myself. I think it would be incredibly fulfilling to make content and have loyal followers and creatively produce something to be loved. Maybe I’m starved for attention or need a creative outlet, but I want to be the person behind the camera that gets to record, edit, and post something I can be proud of.

The ASMR content I would create would be a mix of lifestyle and personal attention. Lifestyle-wise, I love the “Saturday Reset with Me” or “Restock Cleaning Supplies with Me” type of content. Something simple, with clean visuals and crisp sound that makes the viewer feel relaxed and in control of their own life when everything is finally organized. For personal attention, I would do things like facial mapping or a dermatological exam. I have absolutely no medical training whatsoever, but I would love to put on some crinkly gloves and pretend to give a nonexistent patient a relaxing care session. I don’t know who thought of this type of thing, but there is something so relaxing about being gently cared for.

Now that I’ve embarrassed myself enough, I would like to thank HerCampus for providing an opportunity to write creatively and share the more intimate aspects of myself with a community. If you know me and you’ve read this, please pretend you don’t, unless you love ASMR too!!!!
