It has been roughly 12 years since the globally recognized Tomodachi Life was released for the Nintendo 3DS. The quirky social simulation game let players create Mii characters based on friends, family and even celebrities, then place them on an island together. Tomodachi Life was unlike anything else Nintendo had made; it was chaotic, hilarious, weirdly emotional and utterly impossible to put down. And then … that was it. No new updates, no sequels, no successors. Nothing.
For years, fans like me held onto hope while Nintendo stayed silent. We replayed our 3DS cartridges until the save data felt ancient. We made peace with the idea that Tomodachi Life might have been a one-time thing.
Until March 27, 2025.
The Announcement
Nintendo shared the news at the end of a Nintendo Direct, a showcase intended to market upcoming releases. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, a brand new entry into the series, is coming to the Nintendo Switch. The reaction was immediate, and the entire fanbase was shocked by its revival. Nintendo’s announcement post on X in Japan quickly became one of the company’s most-liked posts ever. It proved the power of the Tomodachi Life community.
Everything You Need to Know
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launched on April 16, 2026, for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, priced at $59.99.
In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, players can build an island, populate it with Mii characters and watch the chaos unfold. You keep them fed, clothed and happy. They fall in love, start fights and have unimaginable dreams about bungee jumping or being chased. It plays out almost like a soap opera.
Living the Dream is not a remaster; it comes with substantial upgrades.
Unlike the apartment-style backdrop of the original, Miis now live in individual houses across a coastal town, and players can customize the island’s layout. It is reminiscent of Animal Crossing: New Horizons in how much control you have over shaping your environment.
Mii creation has also been leveled up; it is the most expressive Mii Maker in history, with separate front and back hairstyles, ear customization, hair streaks, unnatural skin tones and new face shapes. Your Miis can finally look how you imagine them, no longer limited by the catalog.
One of the biggest changes is how relationships function. Instead of just waiting for Miis to become friends or fall in love at random, you can directly influence their connections. It eliminates the time spent waiting for random interactions.
Back in 2014, Nintendo faced criticism for failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life and issued an apology. The company promised that a future installment would be more inclusive and representative of all players, and Nintendo followed through. Living the Dream is the first game in the series to include same-sex couples and nonbinary Miis.
You can also design custom objects, such as pets, artwork and decorations, and add them directly to your island. The level of creativity in this game is unparalleled.
I’ve loved this series since the Nintendo 3DS days, quietly hoping that Nintendo hadn’t forgotten about it. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is for the longtime fans who never stopped believing, while also being the perfect entry point for anyone new to the series. I highly recommend this game; it’s funny, heartfelt and chaotic in the best way possible.
