This past Tuesday, I attended the dance show, “School of Rhythm,” here at St. Bonaventure. A handful of my friends are on the dance team, and I was told by them that I just had to go, so I did exactly that.
Walking into this, I had no idea what to expect; I had never been to a dance show before this. I kind of figured it would be something like a showcase, showing off the team’s skills and dance abilities. It was completely different, though.
The show was a curated story based on the Disney hit movie, “School of Rock,” which, looking back at the names now, seemed pretty straightforward. The dance team’s version of this followed the same story, but instead replaced music with dance.
The storyline was very entertaining and was fun to watch. But what I really wanted to talk about were the dances.
Oh. My. Gosh.
I do not come from a dance background whatsoever, but when I was sitting in the audience watching my friends and the other students perform their dances, I was moved.
The “Battle of the beats” dance had to be my absolute favorite. Each dancer had different types of jerseys on and had a hip-hop style of dance. If it wasn’t hip-hop, I’m sorry, I’m very uneducated when it comes to dance! The music was full of remixed songs that I adore, and the dance was so fun to watch; it looked like the dancers were having such a blast.
One of the other second-act dances, named “No more pretending,” was phenomenal. There was so much character throughout the dance, and at one point, they lifted some of the dancers. The dark-sounding music fit beautifully with the style of the dance and their matching outfits.
Probably one of the most fun dances to watch was “Feel the Rhythm,” which consisted of the entire dance team. They split the groups up by shirt colors, and all had their moment in the spotlight. At the end, the whole team came together to dance as one group. I absolutely adored it.
The final dance, the “Encore,” was the seniors’ final dance as a group for the show. It was so moving and emotional watching these dancers show their talents one last time on the stage. I loved how they showcased all of the seniors throughout this dance, leaving no one in the shadows.
In the end, I had such a great time being able to support my friends on the dance team by showing up for them. I was exposed to the world of dance and got to see people showcase their talents, and I was amazed. I absolutely loved it!
