As someone who lives in Kansas City, here are my recommendations of activities in KC to do if you are visiting or staying through the summer!
Nelson atkins museum
The Nelson Atkins Museum is a world class art museum that has 12 different collections from places around the world, multiple rotating exhibitions, and a sculpture garden. The museum has a restaurant and coffee shop on the inside, but I think bringing food and having a picnic on the front lawn is the best. Outside, there is also a mini-golf course and a scavenger hunt. All ages are able to have fun and learn more about art and culture for free. The museum is open Thursday-Monday and the sculpture garden is open from sunrise to sunset every day.
Kansas City zoo
The Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium is the perfect activity to do on a nice (not too hot) summer day. The zoo is filled with all your favorite animals and is split into five sections. The trails are quite long, but there are trams, trains, boats, and a sky safari to ride if your legs need a break. Along with the transportation, there is a carousel and a zip line that you can buy a ticket for. The zoo is not free; however, buying tickets online and being a resident of Jackson County can make your tickets cheaper.
KC CURRENT GAME
KC Current is the professional women’s soccer teamed based right on the riverfront in Kansas City. There is no better feeling than being in the CPKC stadium as it is filled to the brim with fans. The stadium has many different food and drink stations that are all local in Kansas City. The tickets can be hard to get because of the dedication of season ticket holders, but standing room and seats higher in the stadium are usually available.
Farmer’s market
Kansas City has a wonderful farmers’ market every Saturday and Sunday at City Market. The farmer’s market not only has usually four or five long rows of local vendors and produce, but it is surrounded by other restaurants, stores and coffee and tea shops. Every weekend morning, there will be hundreds of people buying flowers, jams, vegetables and homemade jewelry. It is the perfect summer vibe and a great place to buy gifts for others.
Worlds of fun
Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are two theme parks in Kansas City that cannot be topped. Worlds of Fun has numerous rollercoasters with huge drops, upside down twists, and super fast rides. It also has a section called, Planet Snoopy, that has smaller rides for toddlers and kids. Worlds of Fun is connected to a waterpark, Oceans of Fun, that has water slides, a play area, a lazy river and a pool bar. If you are with kids, teenagers, or adults these parks cater to all.
Growing up in Kansas City these were (and are) my favorite things to do during a nice summer day and I hope you can enjoy them too!
