After four years off the grid, Euphoria reemerges older, heavier, and unwilling to pretend time heals anything. The Season 3 premiere drops us five years into the future, and Rue (played by Zendaya) and the rest of the former East Highland crew may have graduated, but they are still caught in the same chaos as previous seasons.Â
From its opening moments, the episode makes it clear this final chapter, led once again by Sam Levinson, is shifting gears. Rue is now smuggling fentanyl across the Mexican border in a desperate attempt to repay the massive debt she owes to the ruthless and terrifying dealer Laurie, portrayed by Martha Kelly. In the beginning scenes, Rue tries to make a daring escape by driving straight over the border wall using ramps set up by a bribed guard. The plan almost works until the car stalls at the very top. Forced to abandon the vehicle, Rue climbs out and makes her way back down to the U.S. on foot.Â
Trapped under Laurie’s control, Rue is essentially working off her debt as a human courier. Forced into increasingly risky smuggling runs, she is made to swallow drug-filled balloons and transport them back into the U.S.Â
Desperate to find a way out of her $100,000 debt, Rue finds herself in deep trouble when a batch of drugs she delivers ends up being cut with fentanyl, leading to the death of a woman at a party hosted by strip club owner Alamo. Blaming Rue, he threatens her life, pushing her to beg for mercy. Instead of killing her outright, he forces her into a terrifying test: balancing an apple on her head and shooting it off. Somehow, his aim is flawless, and Rue makes it out alive.Â
In Season 3, Cassie and Nate have found their way back to each other and are now deep into a full-blown relationship, even talking about getting married. They have settled down in a lavish mansion, tucked inside what Rue describes as an insulated, ultra-conservative suburban world. Nate has stepped into his father’s role, taking over the family construction business and spearheading a new project marketed as a high-end end-of-life community in Southern California. Cassie finds herself isolated in their sprawling mansion, frustrated as she struggles to get Nate to spend on things like renovations and their over-the-top wedding plans, including an eye-watering floral budget. Looking for her own source of income and attention, Cassie leans into a provocative online persona, staging stylized photo shoots with the help of her maid.Â
While most of the first episode focuses primarily on Rue and Cassie’s lives, we also see hints of the new lives of Lexi and Maddy. Lexi is now living in her own apartment and working as an assistant to a major Hollywood figure. Her days are a mix of running errands and tagging along on set for Patty’s soap, where she occasionally chimes in with ideas of her own. Lexie is still in contact with Maddy, who is trying to break into the industry from the business side, working at a talent management firm. As for Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, she doesn’t appear on screen at all in Season 3’s premiere. The only update comes secondhand, when Maddy casually mentions that Jules is now living as a “sugar baby”.Â
In the years between Seasons 2 and 3, the show lost Angus Cloud, who played Fezco after his death in July 2023. Within the story, Fezco’s fate takes a different turn. Rue explains that he is now serving a 30-year prison sentence following the raid on his home back in Season 2. Lexi admits that he has been trying to reach her from behind bars, but she hasn’t answered his calls. Rue pushes her to reconsider, revealing that Fezco has told her he still misses Lexi.Â
If the premiere is any indication, this season isn’t pulling any punches, and that only makes the wait for next week feel even longer. For now, though, fans can settle back into the chaos and comfort of it all, because “Euphoria Sundays” are finally back and better than ever.
