Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr. were one of the most followed and talked-about romances of the 1990s. The couple is back in the spotlight following the release of the series Love Story (based on 90s celebrity relationships on Disney+). Across 9 episodes, the show portrays the development of their union, showing their history and the challenges the pair faced, emphasizing the complexity of a love frequently hounded by the media and victimized by tabloids.
The couple, known as “American Royalty” due to their high status, stood out for their intense romance, marked by the tragic end of both partners in a plane crash in Massachusetts, USA. The series delves into the various layers of the relationship between the fashion publicist and the world-renowned lawyer coveted by American society, exalting them as the “it couple” of the moment.
In addition to Carolyn and JFK Jr., there were several iconic couples in the 90s, and many other relationships that defined the era.
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
The actors, world-famous for their roles in Friends and Fight Club, met in 1994 when their managers, who were close friends, introduced them. However, there was no romantic interest from either side at the time, as Brad Pitt was in a relationship and Jennifer Aniston was focused on her career.
In 1998, the actors’ agents set them up on a blind date at a private restaurant. The actress later revealed that the date had been “awkward” but “a lot of fun” because of the strong connection they felt for each other. They began dating a few weeks after the meeting, but the couple decided to keep it a secret from the media for a while, as both were at the peak of their careers and would be in the spotlight.
The couple made their union official to the public in September 1999 on the Emmy Awards red carpet. Two months later, they announced their engagement at a Sting concert, where the actress displayed her diamond ring on stage. The engagement quickly became a media sensation, and the two were seen as the “perfect couple” and “Hollywood’s Sweethearts”: beautiful, famous, and wealthy. However, the relationship did not last long; in 2005, Aniston and Pitt decided to divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the official reason. Although the media raised speculations of infidelity, the actors continue to show great affection for each other today.
Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder
Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder formed one of the most iconic couples of the 90s, with a union marked by intense love, symbolic tattoos, and even cinematic partnerships. The actors met in 1989 at the premiere of the film Great Balls of Fire! and Depp told Rolling Stone magazine that he fell in love at first sight—that everything around him went into slow motion, just like in the movie West Side Story. Their first date was at the iconic Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood. Soon after, they were formally introduced at a mutual friend’s house and immediately realized they shared interests in music, books, and antique poetry.
After many dates, the relationship evolved into dating and, within five months, an engagement. In 1990, Johnny and Winona starred together in the film Edward Scissorhands. Beyond the chemistry displayed on screen, the love between the couple grew even stronger, featuring public declarations of love and even the “Winona Forever” tattoo, marking the beginning of the decade with a gothic style and alternative aesthetic.
However, the relationship came to an end in 1993. Johnny went on to say that the age difference between them, media pressure, and the early intensity hindered their relationship. Ultimately, both have mentioned in interviews that they still feel a great deal of respect and affection for one another today.
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love
Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the band Nirvana, and Courtney Love, lead singer of the band Hole, became one of the most emblematic couples in 90s rock, known for their grunge aesthetic and their blend of love and chaos. It is not known for certain how the partners met, but many claim it was at a “Dharma Bums” performance in 1988, where Courtney—who was involved with someone else—fell madly in love with Kurt. After being formally introduced and having mutual friends, it didn’t take long for a friendship to bloom and, by 1991, a romance.
The relationship was notoriously troubled, as both began using drugs, were constantly breaking up, and were always involved in controversies, leading many to believe the relationship was destined for failure. Nevertheless, the pair married in February 1992 in a beautiful ceremony in Hawaii, and six months later, Frances Bean Cobain, the couple’s only daughter, was born.
However, in April 1994, Courtney received the terrible news that the famous Nirvana frontman had committed suicide, leaving behind his legacy, a legion of fans, and his newly formed family.
Victoria Beckham and David Beckham
Victoria Beckham, known as Posh Spice of the “Spice Girls,” and David Beckham, known as a star soccer player for “Manchester United,” met in 1997 after a soccer match in the Manchester United players’ lounge. David had spotted Victoria from across the lounge and fell in love instantly, but he was too shy to speak to the artist, so he simply waved and said “hello” before leaving. However, Victoria had also fallen in love with David at first sight and later joked that she was “stalking” the athlete because she was so interested in meeting him.
The couple’s first real interaction was the following week. Victoria went to another game and worked up the courage to talk to David, resulting in a conversation that lasted an hour. After the singer got a bit “tipsy” following a few drinks, she had to rush home, so she quickly scribbled her number on a train ticket and handed it to the player, who kept the paper for many years. The very next day, David called “Posh Spice,” and shortly after, they started dating.
In 1998, the couple got engaged, and after a year-long engagement, they married in a luxurious castle in Ireland, where their son—who was 4 months old at the time—served as the ring bearer. Despite rumors of infidelity over the years, the couple continues to demonstrate their love, affection, and respect for one another, completing 26 years of marriage in 2025.
