Pollen Allergies Survival

It’s that time of the month and season where flowers start to bloom everywhere, the temperature rises, trees are colorful, birds are chirping, and everyone is out on campus either relaxing or studying. All that happiness is there (and don’t get me wrong the flowers are beautiful and fascinating to look at) but there is a reality that people don’t know. POLLEN!! I know a lot of people have pollen allergies, including myself, and it’s frustrating to deal with while going out! For someone who loves being outside, it affects me a lot since my eyes get itchy and watery, I sneeze, my nose gets runny and congested—overall, I look like I’m about to cry. Even while sleeping or focusing on something, my nose tends to be closed or become runny to the point where I can’t sleep at all!  Medications such as Zyrtec never did wonders for me!

As someone who has pollen allergies and is in the process of recovering, here are tricks to survive pollen allergies!! I would recommend buying nasal spray and eye drops to avoid having red eyes and a runny or closed nose. I would also recommend wearing mascara, just so to avoid rubbing your eyes.

I would also recommend trying home remedies such as manuka honey. I’ve seen on TikTok and even done my research about it and learned it helps with alleviating symptoms of allergies. My mom recommended this to me as well so I tried it and the next day I was completely fine.

I know people won’t like this but definitely take Benadryl and Claritin! These two medications also saved me. Although Benadryl makes you sleepy and drowsy, it honestly made me better the next day and same for Claritin. I had no allergy symptoms problems whatsoever!

Lastly, this is tough but please stay indoors! You want to try to avoid being out for too long and just maximize the hours you’re out to get at least some vitamin D when the temperature is low. Take a rest, watch a show, go to the gym indoors and stay hydrated!

I'm a second year biochemistry major at Thomas Jefferson University, this is my first year writing for Her Campus. Ever since elementary school, I always loved writing about any topics and I'm very grateful to get a chance to write using this platform.

About me is that I was raised and born in New Jersey. In my spare time, I love to dance, play badminton and run, and spend time with family and friends. I also like to write sometimes because with writing, it allows me to express more about myself.

I hope through Her Campus, it gives me the opportunity to improve my writing skills and to inspire women. As well as the audience getting to know about my experiences and opinions through my writing and hearing other women voice out about themselves as well!
