What’s happening with Pope Leo XIV and the U.S. President?

There has been a lot of news coverage on Trump’s response to the Pope’s stance on current global political issues.

The approach by Trump has been aggressive, disrespectful, and outrageously particular to his style of media engagement and patterns of AI usage. There is a contrast of how rare – and yet routine – this type of behavior has become on behalf of the U.S. president, and I am here to interpret the conversation between the two leaders.

No U.S. President has reached the extreme approach of radical speech like Donald Trump. At this point, it is not about his Republican White supremacist rhetoric, but rather an outright use of foul language communicated to anyone contesting his administration and international military actions.

Within the U.S., the people governed are constantly ridiculed, like the AI video of an airplane dropping feces over crowds of protesters on a “No Kings” protest. As bizarre a sentence as it sounds, it all has become a joke, but no one in the crowd is laughing.

President Trump has no decorum left for his own nation’s citizens, international leaders, and much less for people of the clergy. In a new attempt at using AI images, Trump posted a fictional photo of himself depicted as Jesus. He later exclaimed that he is meant to portray a “doctor,” but this symbolizes much more. Apart from his abilities being far from a healer, his mocking of Jesus Christ is a huge disrespect to all Catholics and a large community of religious Americans.

The image depicts Trump as the savior, with a large American flag in the background, soldiers in the clouds, and an eagle flying, pushing the narrative of Trump as the American hero. This is common “U.S. power to the rescue” satire, and the illusory storyline he is constructing is not very holy in the eyes of the Christian church.

The Pope of the Vatican is the Bishop of Rome, leader of the Roman Catholic Church, and the highest figure for Catholics; people within the apostolic church follow his words, and he has a strong ideological influence on faithful believers globally. In April, Pope Leo XIV called for peace in the war in Iran. He stated the war is unjust, and he condemned the threats President Trump made to destroy Iran.

Pope Leo continues to speak out on working toward peace in the Middle East, calling for action, persuading people to call authorities (political leaders), and asking them to always reject war. This opposition to Trump’s motives spiraled into a back-and-forth discussion between the two, but Trump’s choice of words is without precedent, calling the Pope “weak” and terrible for foreign policy.

Trump’s wild communication methods have been a part of his political persona, creating a large following of strong MAGA Americans. Although untraditional to presidential public communication, his speech style is popularized amongst his followers, creating an acceptance for his behavior.

This pattern is not one wise to follow, as he has already lost a large amount of popularity from Christians, being that Catholics are the largest denomination of Christianity. His communication methods are offensive, and it matters that people continue to speak out against his ignorant executive decisions, rude language, and lack of manners and etiquette.

The dispute between the two has escalated, and as they continue, it is important to recognize the value of the Pope speaking out against a violent president, regardless of religious affiliation.
