Balling on a Budget and Saving The Environment: TooGoodToGo Has Become My Newest Obsession.

Over the past month, I’ve discovered my new favorite app, which has quickly become an obsession. I downloaded TooGoodToGo on a whim, but after my first surprise bag, I was completely hooked.

If TooGoodToGo hasn’t been all over your TikTok FYP like it has been on mine, allow me to introduce you to why I’ve become absolutely obsessed with this app. TooGoodToGo partners with restaurants, bakeries, and grocery stores and posts leftover food daily that’s at, or almost at, its sell-by date. Instead of tossing perfectly good food at closing time, businesses package up “surprise bags,” which, if you’re lucky enough, you can snag at a fraction of the cost.

The thrill of the surprise bags might even be the best part, after all, who doesn’t like a little mystery? I love the idea of getting a combination of items that’s different every single time. Even if you purchase the same surprise bag category multiple times, you’re guaranteed to get an assortment of foods. Picking up feels like an exciting highlight in my day. Oftentimes, my friends and I turn it into an unboxing event and a fun little activity we can do together.

As a college student, I’m all for balling on a budget. The price alone for these bags makes it completely worth it. A majority of bags sell for under $10 but contain items that add up to double, triple, and in some cases even quadruple the value. Often, one to two bags last me a week, depending on the expiration dates. Using this app has quickly cut my grocery costs in half each week.

Beyond saving money, TooGoodToGo’s main focus is reducing food waste to build a more sustainable community. This app provides an easy, simple, and effective way to reduce waste from businesses like Whole Foods, Pizza Hut, and small local spots. The app gives you a reminder after purchase that feels so rewarding: “Thanks for helping to reduce food waste!” It even shows how much food you’ve saved.

My personal favorite finds mostly come from Whole Foods. I love the Bakery Bag, and I feel like I can always find something useful in the produce bags. I also really enjoy it whenever I can get my hands on a Pizza Hut surprise bag, though they are much less likely to be available than other bags. I have gotten full loaves of bread, large pizzas, vegetable trays, and even steak tips. There’s always something I know I’ll enjoy from the bags, and it’s a great way to try new things I wouldn’t normally buy.

Overall, TooGoodToGo has become one of my staple apps that I check regularly. I suggest every college student try it out at least once; it’s definitely an app that’s worth the download. Once you try it, don’t be surprised if it becomes your newest obsession too.
