During my time as a business management student at Texas A&M, I have learned many lessons (both positive and negative), and now that I’m graduating soon, I’d love to share a few of my experiences and advice for other business students. Of course, this is all from my personal experiences of what I’ve learned from my years as a business student, so take my advice with a grain of salt!
- Mays is competitive!
I know that everyone says this, and of course, it’s true of all business schools, but it really is very competitive. Everyone is constantly comparing their classes and working very hard to get the best grades and the best internships. There is even competition between majors. There is an unknown underlying feeling within Mays that finance, MIS, and accounting majors are smarter or superior to other majors. However, even if that may feel like the case or you may hear it sometimes, it is NOT TRUE. No major is less than or easy, and every path is different. Comparing yourself to other majors or students will only put unnecessary stress and pressure on yourself.Â
- Take the CBKs (Core Business Knowledge classes) with good professors.Â
A lot of the CBKs have a wide variety of professor options available to take, and some of them are definitely a lot better than others. I would highly recommend asking your older friends or looking it up on either Rate My Professor or the Grade Annex to determine who the best professors are. I know this sounds super obvious, but a lot of the CBKs are unnecessarily hard, weed-out classes, so giving yourself the best chance to succeed is extremely important.Â
- Make friends with people in your major-specific classes.
As you get into the upper-level courses for your major (for example, I am a Management major on the Entrepreneurial Leadership track), be sure to make friends with some of the people in your classes. I promise, as you advance, more and more of the same people will be in your classes. I have met some of my best friends in my major classes, and I think it is so important to reach out and create connections so that you have someone on the same path as you. Even if they don’t end up being your best friends, they are always a great resource to try to schedule classes with or collaborate with on classwork.Â
- DON’T GIVE UP!
I know Mays Business School is hard. I know the CBKs (especially accounting and finance) are extremely difficult. But I also know that you can do it! Push through and use your friends and resources to help you succeed. There are so many people around you who want you to succeed, and Mays is no match for you and your perseverance. Soon enough, you’ll be like me, about to graduate, and looking back on your time as a business student.Â
- Join a Business Org!
I joined AWIB (Aggie Women in Business) my freshman year, and it has been the best time. I have made so many incredible friends through the org, and I have gotten to be a part of so many amazing events, both social and professional. Business orgs set you up so well for your professional and personal future, and I would highly encourage everyone to find one that fits you. Even if that is not AWIB, find another one where you know you’ll love the people, its events, and the professional opportunities.
- Don’t worry so much!
I know it may seem that everyone in the business school has their whole life figured out, but believe me, that is not the case. If you need an example, I graduate soon, and I still don’t have a job lined up (pray for me!). But even if you feel like you’re the only one who doesn’t, you definitely aren’t. I know so many people who are struggling to figure out what exactly they want to do and who they want to be after college. You are not alone in your struggles, and I promise there is always a plan. Put yourself out there, join organizations, and network. You will find a job that you love and a career path or passion that is right for you. Even if there are some twists and turns, things have a way of working themselves out! Or the journey will lead you to where you need to be!
All in all, I know that Mays Business School can be scary. I’ve been there! But as you get older, get into your specific major, and start figuring out what you want to do, time goes so fast as a business student. Make memories, make friends, and enjoy all the incredible experiences and opportunities!
