Happy Women’s History Month!
In honor of Women’s History Month, I wanted to share a few of my favorite female characters who never fail to move me each time I see them on screen. There are countless women who deserve a spot on this list, but when I think of stories that truly comfort, excite or inspire me each time I sit down for a rewatch, these are the women dominating the screen. Here are three of my top favorite female main characters:
1. C.J. Cregg
If you haven’t yet watched The West Wing, it should be next on your list. Allison Janney is absolutely amazing as C.J. Cregg, the United States Press Secretary, in this gripping drama about the inner workings of the White House. She is a strong, honest and refreshing female lead in a cast largely dominated by men. Her sharp and quick-witted commentary makes C.J.’s humor unmatched. When Janney appeared on my screen again last year during my viewing of The Diplomat, I couldn’t have been more thrilled.
2. Sun Hwa-Kwon
Another one of my all time favorite shows is Lost. Underrated among Gen Z viewers, Lost is a show I couldn’t stop watching and one I come back to time and time again. But among the amazing cast of female characters, one sticks out in particular: Sun. Played by Yunjin Kim, Sun exhibits a quieter, patient strength. She is a complex character with many layers, but nevertheless serves as a steady force throughout the series. If you’ve seen Lost, then you know that each character has both a unique back story and a special role to play in the survival of the characters throughout their time on the island. Without a doubt, Sun is integral to their success.
3. Katniss Everdeen
This list would not be complete without the one and only Katniss Everdeen. Ever since I picked up The Hunger Games in 6th grade, Katniss has made it on every one of my “favorites” lists. Not only is she seriously badass, she’s also loyal and loving. Katniss and Primrose have an incredible relationship that I always admired given my love for my own younger sister. Jennifer Lawrence also happens to be one of the funniest people ever, and I always look forward to what she’ll do next.
These three women are the embodiment of both guts and compassion, each with their own talents and immeasurable intelligence. C.J., Sun and Katniss, along with many of our other favorite female leads, prove that women are truly changing the world—both on and off screen. Happy Women’s History Month!
