If you are close to me, you know sitcoms are my favorite. On any given day, I am ready to rewatch any episode thrown my way, from the classics everyone knows and loves to the throwbacks of my parents’ childhoods. You can count on me to be ready with a reference in any situation from one of these shows. With that being said, here are some sitcom episodes that have gone double platinum in my house.
“The Best Burger In New York” – How I met your mother
How I Met Your Mother is and will forever be my favorite TV show. It was something I fell in love with during COVID and have watched 30 times over (this is not an exaggeration). Whenever I am unsure of what to watch, I will always come back to this episode. Something about it is both comforting and exciting (and manages to make me hungry every time). It provides throwbacks to Marshall’s first days in the city, a celebrity cameo from Regis Philbin, and consistent comedy. I will be rewatching this as soon as I am done writing.
“Cooler” – New Girl
This episode holds a special place in my heart. Spoiler alerts ahead if you haven’t seen this!
This is the episode where we first see Nick and Jess kiss and it gives me chills every time I watch. The sheer buildup of their relationship over the course of the show is amazing, but this episode is perfection. Besides that event, we also get to see them play more of True American, a game played in the loft. My favorite thing about this game is that the characters are completely making the rules up as they go. It is pure chaos wrapped tightly into one episode that I just can’t seem to ever skip over.
“Connection lost” – modern family
Unique is the only word to describe this episode. As the caption of the photo says, this episode never leaves the screen of a computer. For its time, this episode felt revolutionary. I had never seen a TV show do what this episode had done up until it aired. It finds a way to encapsulate the chaos and humor found within misunderstandings, and that is truly what makes this show hilarious.
“the One where ross got high” – friends
I couldn’t talk about sitcoms and not put Friends on here. Nothing can top a Friends Thanksgiving episode, and this is my absolute favorite. Rachel messing up the trifle is pure gold, and then when Ross and Monica start fighting, I can’t help but break into non-stop laughter. I’ve adopted so many quotes from this show and am constantly referencing the trifle at home. This is a perfect episode to go back to if you need a good laugh.
“moira RosĂ©” – Schitts creek
Schitt’s Creek may just be one of the funniest shows I have ever watched. Everyone has such a distinct personality, and the way each clashes with one another is what makes this show. This episode in particular reigns supreme as it showcases the dynamic between Moira and David, who are two big personalities. They are taste testing wine to be named after Moira and find out they’re all disgusting. My favorite bit comes when David begins mixing the wines and thinks it tastes “better.” But there are obvious reasons why they feel this way. This is a definite watch if you are looking to get into the show.
I could write a list of probably hundreds of episodes, but we would all be here forever. There is nothing I love more than sitcoms. If you are looking for a sitcom to watch, you can’t go wrong with any of these five. And, when you get to these episodes, I hope you love them as much as I do.
