Delhi is a city where history hides in every corner, and Hauz Khas Fort stands as one of its most fascinating yet overlooked treasures. If you’re looking for history within easy reach, Delhi is the place to be. Hauz Khas Fort stands out as another notable historical landmark in the city. The fort takes its name from the present-day Hauz Khas neighborhood. With its striking fortifications and the scenic lake within the complex, Hauz Khas Fort offers an ideal setting for a tranquil afternoon.

Hauz Khas Fort, along with its lake, remains one of Delhi’s lesser-known historical gems. In recent years, the Hauz Khas complex has become popular for its trendy cafés and vibrant social scene. However, the area offers much more than just dining spots, with its rich history and architectural charm adding to its appeal.

History of hauz khas fort

The Hauz Khas Fort complex dates back to the 12th century, during the reign of Alauddin Khilji. At its heart was a large water reservoir, originally created to supply water to the city of Siri, which Khilji founded in what is now Delhi. This reservoir, known as “Hauz-i-Alai,” eventually became the lake seen in the complex today. In the 13th century, Firoz Shah Tughlaq restored the reservoir and expanded the complex by constructing the fort along with several structures, including his tomb, madrassas, mosques, and pavilions. The site was designed as a well-planned architectural ensemble, blending functionality with elegance. The madrassa and mosque, built across different levels, overlook the reservoir, while the madrassa features a distinctive L-shaped layout with stairways leading down toward the lake.

architectural Highlights

At the entrance of Hauz Khas Fort, six elegant pavilions stand amidst a garden setting. These beautifully crafted structures feature domes with intricate detailing and are believed to mark graves. Historically, both the gardens and these pavilions were considered part of the madrassa complex. On the northern side of Hauz Khas Fort, there is a small mosque that overlooks the lake. It reflects the same architectural style, featuring a graceful domed design similar to the other structures in the complex.

what to see inside the complex

Firoz Shah’s Tomb is another prominent feature within the Hauz Khas Fort complex, situated between the L-shaped madrassa on the upper level. The tomb houses four graves- one belonging to Firoz Shah himself, and the others to his sons and grandsons. Unlike many other tombs in Delhi, it is primarily constructed using rubble masonry and plaster, though red sandstone has been used for certain sections, particularly for inscriptions. The entrance to the tomb reflects a harmonious blend of Indian and Islamic architectural styles.

The staircase connecting the madrassa to Hauz Khas Lake is now closed for safety reasons, meaning there is no direct access to the lake from within the fort complex.
