Psych is a lighthearted show that I have loved since I first watched it with my brother in middle school. The show follows the story of Shawn, a guy who can never seem to land a job, and Gus, Shawn’s best friend and a pharmaceutical sales rep. Shawn uses his hyperawareness and deduction skills to solve a case for the Santa Barbara Police Department and when they suspect him of participating in the crime, he lies about being a psychic. The two best friends end up solving cases for the police through their business Psych. The show is an awesome watch and never fails to make me laugh, and I think more people should watch it. Here are a few reasons that I think will convince you.
Psych has one of the best duos I’ve watched on a show. Shawn and Gus, played by James Roday and Dulé Hill, are incredibly well-developed characters. They’re childhood friends who have gone through so much together. Their friendship has developed in such a real way that they seem like the epitome of friendship. Sure, Shawn and Gus throw each other under the bus sometimes and pick petty fights, but when they need each other, they always have each other’s backs. For example, when Gus is crying in the middle of the night, he calls Shawn, knowing his best friend will show up with milkshakes and watch TV with him. That type of friendship is what makes them such a good duo. They’re so comfortable with each other that whenever one of them lies or makes up a story, the other one seamlessly adds on or plays along with the story (even if Gus is sometimes clearly annoyed with his role). For example, when Shawn tried signing up for a children’s martial arts class, the instructor refused because Shawn wasn’t 5-8 years old. Gus stepped in and accused the establishment of discrimination and ageism, and began acting like Shawn’s lawyer, using legal jargon to intimidate the man.
Along with having the best duo ever, Psych is also great for bingeing. My mom always says the comedy is stupid, but that’s honestly a good thing about the show. Whenever I’ve watched the show, I’ve always had a good laugh because it’s so hard not to laugh at Shawn and Gus’s antics. Psych is such a good binge-watching show because it’s so lighthearted, and the comedy makes you feel better. The show’s formula mixes mystery with comedy so effectively that even though each episode has the same structure, the comedy and the new mysteries make it so unique and easy to watch.
Speaking of the structure, sometimes there’s a special theme for an episode. For the special themes, they change the intro song to match the theme. For example, they have Christmas-themed episodes with holiday-inspired intro songs. One of my favorite episodes was the Bollywood-themed episode. As an Indian kid growing up with American media, I had rare representations of myself on the screen. I remember watching the Bollywood episode for the first time and being shocked and so excited because I felt represented and seen.
Psych is such a good show and I would highly recommend watching it. I’ve watched it and rewatched it so many times that I’ve lost count. It might become your new favorite show or not, but it’ll definitely make you laugh!
