Mexico City is Seriously Underrated and Here’s Why

In January of this year, my dad and I traveled to Mexico City! I didn’t know too much about CDMX (Ciudad de México) before I went. But now, I can confidently say that CDMX is one of my favorite places I have ever been to and I cannot recommend it enough!

That being said, here are my top reasons (and opinions) as to why you should visit CDMX on your next international adventure…

  • From most major US cities, CDMX is typically a 3 to 5 hour flight, which is much shorter than it would take to get to Europe. So, it is a perfect trip for next your week off or even just a nice long weekend. Also, CDMX is in Central Standard Time so jet lag won’t be an issue!
  • An absolute MUST is to visit the home of Frida Kahlo, Casa Azul. This is one of my all time favorite museums I have ever been to. Casa Azul is where Frida was born, lived, and passed away. Outside, there is a beautiful garden. Inside, you can see her studio, bedroom, paintings, personal belongings, artifacts and photographs of her life. In a separate area of the house, there is an exhibit titled “Appearances Can Be Deceiving: The Dresses of Frida Kahlo” which showcases Frida’s fabulous wardrobe. The clothes were set aside by her husband Diego Rivera and weren’t discovered until 50 years after her death.
  • Teotihuacan is less than 1 hour away from the city center. It is considered one of the most influential cities in the ancient world and is made up of 3 beautiful pyramid-like structures. One piece of advice I can give to anyone before making the journey out there from CDMX is to not underestimate tour groups. I had a great guide that was extremely knowledgeable on the history and cultural context!
  • The food is fantastic! While tacos are definitely a popular choice, don’t sleep on tostadas, mole and tortilla soup. We stayed in the Polanco district and there are SO many great (and cheap) options. And of course, churros for dessert are NEVER a bad idea.

Overall, there are so many great things to do in CDMX whether you like art, shopping, history, or the outdoors. If I ever have the opportunity to go again, I would do so in a heartbeat!
