Where Are The New Faces In The Film Industry?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at West Chester chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

In recent years, we have seen the same faces over and over again in the film industry. While we all have favorite actors and actresses that we want to see on the big screen, it can sometimes get repetitive. It’s understandable that these actors and actresses get chosen for a reason; they are well-known. Fan culture has a way of influencing directors to choose the fans’ favorite actors. This is especially common when it comes to fan castings that go extremely viral; they all have an effect on the final casting, which I personally think is unfair. While they may bring the movie/show more attention, many people have been talking about how they are tired of the same old faces.

We can see this with a few famous actors and actresses. Examples include TimothĂ©e Chalamet, Jacob Elordi, Margot Robbie, Zendaya, and Pedro Pascal. In no way are these actors and actresses lacking in skill and talent – that’s part of the reason they are casted. However, we can also acknowledge that when a film or show casts new faces, they give those actors the chance to break out into the industry. Wuthering Heights is an extremely popular example of this. There has been a lot of conversation about the casting of both Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. Many say that Jacob Elordi does not look like the well-known literary character Heathcliff, signifying a lack of acknowledgement towards Heathcliff’s race in the novel. Writer Dani Di Placido from Forbes Magazine quoted, “Online, Wuthering Heights readers criticized Elordi’s casting, arguing that Heathcliff, as depicted in the novel, is not white, and that his racial identity is tied to his outsider status.” People are not happy with the casting of this movie. Many feel as though both were casted because they are A-list celebrities, which in my opinion, makes sense. We have seen Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie time and time again; it’s time for someone new.

Jacob Elordi’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ Casting Controversy, Explained

There are thousands of well-established, talented actors that are just waiting for their big break. New faces are adored by audiences in the film industry. A widely known example of this is the cast of Heated Rivalry. Both Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie were not well-known actors before Heated Rivalry, and after the show came out, their lives completely changed. Connor Storrie was a waiter before his break and says in an interview with Interview Magazine, “I was fully prepared for nothing to really come of this.” This just shows that casting new faces can completely change their lives. Hudson Williams was also a waiter at an Italian restaurant before the success of the show. While both are currently working in the entertainment industry, they acknowledge where they came from and the effort, they had to put in to get to where they are. This goes to show us that one casting can completely change someone’s life, which is something that we all love to see. Audiences love to be inspired by new faces on their TV.
