Serve-iving the Winter: How to Stay Warmly Stylish

Amherst recently welcomed its UMass community back from winter break with teeth-chattering cold temperatures. With the freezing weather came an increase in layers, but it was less of a fashion choice and more of a survival tactic. Suddenly, everyone is rocking their hoodies and sweats. Despite being bundled up, I refuse to succumb to athleisure this winter. There is a middle ground between keeping your style and not being able to feel your face. After a few weeks of trial and error (and many humbling, windy walks), here are the things that have been working for me.

Fleece-lined tights or leggings

This is a holy grail. My biggest secret. These have carried me out of the door numerous times for both nights out and to my lecture halls. I will recommend these to anyone who will listen. Fleece-lined leggings are more for every day. I pair them with some thick jeans and I’m set. Either way, once you start wearing them it’s hard to go back.

Puffer jacket under much cooler jacket method

My favorite thing to do at home is to steal jackets from my family’s closet and layer them. When I’m off to college, I don’t get to indulge in this hobby of mine.

Here’s my solution: I wear a lightweight puffer jacket concealed underneath a jacket I like aesthetically. You get all of the insulation and the style in one. If you zip both up, no one will know.

Thermals

Thermals have a reputation for being solely practical, but honestly they are underrated. I’ve got a few ideas for thermals. With the revival of 2000s clothing comes the baby Tee with long sleeves combo. I raise you: even warmer long sleeves, designed for arctic conditions, under those same baby Tees. I refuse to only live that aesthetic in the autumn. If that’s not your speed, I would suggest wearing them with a cardigan as well, or entirely on their own with jeans. They are so versatile and can be used as the base for many different styles. They really make the difference.

Lacey undershirt peaking out of sweater

After a while, I found my sweaters to feel a bit repetitive. A small way to make them more interesting for me is by layering a lace or frilly tank top underneath, so it peeks out at the neckline or hem. It adds allure. It creates the illusion of an elaborate outfit happening underneath, but in reality it’s a five-second addition to make things feel less monotonous.

The classics: gloves, scarves, hats

A form of self expression that isn’t available in summer is winter accessories, so invest in some that truly speak to you. Recently I’ve been loving ushanka hats. They are dramatic in the best way and actually warm. I’ve also been rocking British Union Jack gloves that are shockingly neutral enough to not clash with my wardrobe. If you despise what hats do to your hair, I recommend giving the balaclava look with a chunky scarf a try. Bonus, I find that it doesn’t really harm whatever hairstyle I attempted that morning.

Amherst winters are definitely a test of endurance, but getting dressed up doesn’t have to feel like giving up. Make use of this time while the snow is still on the ground and unlock an entirely new form of self expression! Have fun!
