In recent ages, we as a population have grown to realize how our actions have been affecting the Earth, and more specifically, the ocean. Global warming, pollution, and other factors have caused many marine ecosystems to be on the brink of collapse. This poses a threat not only for the marine environment, but also humans as well, who use the oceans as a major source of food and employment. That leaves the question: How do we attempt to fix it before it’s too late?
One sculptor and environmentalist, Jason deCaires Taylor, has found a partial solution to this problem through underwater sculptures. With over 1,200 artworks below the surface, he places importance on conservation, education, and connection between humans and the environment.
These artworks are created using environmentally friendly materials and serve as artificial reefs. They support a wide array of underwater organisms and take the pressure off of natural reefs, allowing them to heal. The art also attracts visitors all over the world, educates them about conservation, and encourages them to push for the defense of their oceans.
Jason deCaires Taylor is only one of the many that are currently in the fight to save our oceans. He understands the beauty of sculptures and uses it to enhance the living state of a crucial environment.
