When it comes to the New Year, there so many different ways to celebrate the holiday. Whether you choose to go out or stay in, you really can’t go wrong. However, some ways to celebrate can be more fun than others.

If you choose to go out, you now have to plan a whole night: Where to go, who’s bringing what, who is all coming and how you’re going to get home. Sometimes going out, especially on a holiday, can feel more like planning an event than actually having fun.

Going out does have its fun. It could be the “best night ever,” and you can spend the whole first day of the new year debriefing with your hometown best friends. Not much can top the morning-after-going-out debrief in my opinion.

Staying in also has its advantages. You can stay in your pajamas all night and do facemasks or spend the night doing your favorite self-care rituals. Whether you’re with friends or family, you can have a calm night in and just have fun with the people closest to you.

As a kid, I always loved New Year’s Eve because it was the only night of the year I was allowed to have Jell-O. It sounds silly, but in recent years, sometimes I wish I had just stayed home and eaten Jell-O.

Though, I think the best way to spend New Year’s Eve is a perfect mix of both staying in and going out. A house party is the best way to spend the holiday, hands-down. You can get together with only the people you really want to be with, no need to avoid people you don’t want to see.

House parties also make it so much easier to get places safely. You can typically just sleep at the house, or one of the “designated drivers” can take everyone home safely. When it comes to holidays where drinking is a big part of the event, it’s very important to make sure you have a safe way home after the festivities are over.

Another great part about house parties is that you don’t have to dress up if you don’t want to. There is so much pressure when you go out to be all dressed up and walk around in the cold. But, at a house party, you don’t have to worry about that.

You can wear jeans, sweatpants, a dress or really anything you want to. All you are doing is walking from the car into a house — you don’t have to freeze when walking from bar to bar.

My personal favorite part about a house party for New Year’s Eve is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money. No LineLeap purchases or buying drinks. Sure, you might to spend money on Uber, but only paying for a ride and not the fun is a plus.

Whichever way you choose to celebrate this year, do what will bring you the most fun, because that is what holidays are all about!
