Movies You Absolutely Must Watch This Christmas

It’s that time of year again. That’s right, folks, the holidays are officially upon us, which can only mean one thing. It’s time for Christmas movies, and of course, holiday cheer. But seriously, Christmas movies.

It has recently come to my attention that the Christmas movies I watched growing up are not as common as I thought. That’s not to say they are unique. The movies I watched are about as classic as they come. But I think that might be the problem.

The Christmas movies I grew up watching tend to be older. Don’t get me wrong, we watch the more recent movies like Jon Favreau’s Elf. But the majority of our movies are from the 1980’s or older.

While I love the newer Christmas movies, I think there should be more appreciation for the older films. There’s something about the outdated styles, and slightly gritty picture that just warms my heart.

It wasn’t until I had a Christmas movie night with a friend that I realized this wasn’t the case for everyone. So, I feel it is my sovereign duty to inform you of some holiday movies you should watch this season. They are older, and at times darker than the ones you may be used to. However, these movies explore the meaning of Christmas in a way that hits your heart. So without further ado, here are two movies you absolutely must watch this holiday season!

No. One A Christmas Carol

Clive Donner’s “A Christmas Carol” is a movie adapted from Charles Dickens’ novella by the same name.  This classic film came out in 1984, and is a pretty accurate depiction of Charles Dickens’ story. It’s dark and at times creepy, which may surprise you as it is a Christmas movie. However, the deeper themes of the story are brought to light through the twisting tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. While any adaptation of A Christmas Carol is good, I implore you to give this movie a try. It really captures the spirit of Dickens’ novella, and the emotional payoff at the end makes it worth the watch!

No. Two It’s a Wonderful Life

Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” is another excellent Christmas movie. This movie follows George Bailey, a good man who is going through a difficult time. It’s not until George Bailey is shown the importance of his life on those around him that he is truly able to appreciate what he has. This movie is full of ups and downs as you join George Bailey through his adolescence and adulthood. This movie has made me cry on more than one occasion, but it earned every tear. If you are looking for a movie to give you a new perspective on life, and appreciate the things you have, look no further. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a great movie, and never fear, it’s a happy ending.

I hope you keep my suggestions in mind this holiday season. While these movies are not as lighthearted as other Christmas movies, they are worth the watch. These movies invoke strong emotions, and embody the spirit of the holiday season. They will make you laugh, cry and so much more. Give them a watch this year, and who knows—you may just find a new movie tradition.
