Boston winters are not for the weak! As a self-proclaimed summer lover, I unfortunately could no longer pretend it was still 85 degrees after the first week of classes. Bundling up and putting on layers is not optional in New England; it is extremely necessary.

As much as I hate winter, working as a sales associate at ALO taught me that wearing the right clothing makes all the difference. ALO, which stands for air, land, and ocean, is primarily an athletic apparel company, but it also offers a wide range of everyday loungewear, jackets, and shoes.

That being said, ALO has a well-rounded, solid winter wardrobe, perfect for a BU student walking around in cold, windy weather. With its cozy matching sets and countless colors, ALO makes quite the Christmas gift.

Although I can no longer exercise my sweet 50% discount, here are some of my ALO must-haves to put on your Christmas list.

Accolade Crew Neck Pullover

The first item on this list is the Accolade Crew Neck Pullover, one of ALO’s bestsellers. These crewnecks are one of my everyday winter staples; you can pair them with any jeans or sweats. The “Espresso” shade is personally my favorite.

These fleece-lined crewnecks keep you very warm. However, they are on the baggier side, so I definitely recommend wearing a cotton tank top underneath to prevent any cold air from seeping through.

ALO fun fact: any item with the “alo” silver accolade is unisex. Nonetheless, I recommend sizing down once or twice from your normal size for a perfect fit. If you’re looking for a top that is similar but not a crewneck, there’s also the Accolade Hoodie and the Accolade ¼ Zip Pullover.

Accolade Sweatpants

Another accolade item is the Accolade Sweatpant. You can mix and match with the accolade crew necks or with any other top. Personally, the athletic Heather Grey sweat set is my favorite! I enjoy wearing these sweats as loungewear or to bed.

Like the crew neck, these thick sweatpants with a fuzzy interior will keep you very warm. They also contain pockets and adjustable waistband strings. My only complaint is that these sweats run long, especially for women, because, again, they are unisex. This is why I recommend the Accolade Sweatpant over the Accolade Straight Leg Sweatpant, which can drag on the floor if you’re under 5’7.

Thankfully, the Accolade Sweatpant has cuffed bottoms, so you can fold them up if necessary. The waistband is also pretty foldable if you want to wear them low-rise. However, if you still do prefer the straight-leg look, you can always get them hemmed.

Sherpa Edge Shacket

If you aren’t feeling a puffer coat but don’t want to commit to a long coat either, the Sherpa Edge Shacket is the best in-between. The shacket works well with layering over bulkier clothing, covering your whole torso and upper body. With pockets on the sides and on the chest, it’s very stylish and functional.

The shacket is the best go-to for those awkward winter days when it’s not freezing, but also not warm enough to go out without layering up. That being said, this jacket works best for weather in the 40s and 50s. While the sherpa material is warm and cozy, it won’t block out strong winds. For colder weather, try the Aspen Love Puffer Jacket.

Leggings

Last but not least, the ⅞ High-Waist Airbrush Legging is an essential staple for layering in the winter. Made from nylon, these leggings fit snugly while still allowing movement, making them easy to wear under baggier jeans, pants, or even skirts, on extra-cold days.

People always emphasize bundling up the upper body with beanies and scarves, yet the lower body tends to get forgotten. By wearing these leggings as an undergarment, your legs will thank you when the temperature hits single digits.

Aside from winter, these leggings are timeless; suitable all year round. I like wearing them when going on a run, to the gym, or as loungewear.

It’s important to note that the same concept with length applies: buy the ⅞ pair if you’re below 5’7 and the regular High-Waist Airbrush Legging if you’re above 5’7.

Winter apparel doesn’t have to be dreadful. With the right pieces, it can actually be fun and creative. It’s really what you make of it, despite the cold weather outside.

With pieces this cozy, practical, and easy to style, it’s hard to imagine ALO not making it onto your Christmas list.
