In college, your free time is made up of 50% studying and 50% trying to find a binge-worthy show to avoid studying. After all, there truly is nothing better than curling up in your blanket, eating your favorite snacks, and watching the best show while the thought of your enormous, lingering workload fades away.

I am an avid TV show watcher, and personally, the most frustrating feeling is the struggle of finishing an amazing show and feeling like nothing else will compare. If you are reading this article, trying to find your next show to binge, trust me, these won’t disappoint.

To preface, I am someone who gets bored easily, so I need content truly captivating from beginning to end. These are 5 of my absolute favorite shows with very brief descriptions (NO SPOILERS).

1. Severance

This show is at the top of my list for good reason. It features employees who work at an ominous and slightly off-putting workplace, Lumon Industries, who are “severed” from their personal lives and memories. In other words, as soon as they enter the office, they shift into their “innie,” whose memories only exist in the office, and when they leave, they shift into their “outie,” who only contains memories of their lives outside of Lumon. The show centers on a group of innies who begin to ask existential questions, revealing the flaws of the system.

2. Silo

If you enjoyed Severance, you will enjoy Silo. Silo is a dystopian show in which people have developed an underground society, believing the outside air to be toxic and deadly. The show follows key characters living in the Silo who begin to question the foundations of their society, and whether the outside world is as dangerous as they think.

3. Cruel Summer

This show has 2 seasons, but each season has its own plot. Overall, both seasons of the show feature drama, suspense, and most importantly, a plot twist. The show is mysteriously dark and keeps you guessing who did it, while also enjoying the drama unfolding between the characters every episode.

4. Black Mirror

Every episode of Black Mirror is like its own twisted universe, with different dystopian plots (a few are actually wholesome). In one episode, you’re watching someone make an impossible choice, and the next you’re watching someone play a video game that feels a little too real. The plots are so unique that you can never get bored with them.

5. Sharp Objects

This show is truly a haunting psychological thriller that I could not look away from. Just when you think you know something, you’re completely proven wrong. As creeped out and on edge as I felt while watching it, I had to know the mystery. It follows a journalist who returns to her eerie hometown to cover the murders of 2 teenage girls. As she digs, she uncovers trauma, twisted family dynamics, and town secrets.

Ambar Katiyar is a freshman studying Economics at the University of Michigan. Her hometown is Livingston, New Jersey. She loves pickleball, traveling, the beach, and enjoys being outside in general. When not in class, she is likely reading, at a coffee shop, or listening to music. She especially loves country and classic rock!
