How to Tackle Finals Season Without Losing Your Mind

Finals season always seems to sneak up on us. One moment you’re enjoying thanksgiving break, the next you’re drowning in papers, readings, and deciding how much caffeine is too much caffeine. But, it doesn’t have to feel like everything is piling up. With a few smart strategies (plus a little moral support from those around you), you can take on finals with confidence.

Here’s how:

  1. Start Studying Earlier Than You Think You Need To

I am always saying “I’ll start tomorrow”, and eventually that ‘tomorrow’ is two weeks late. Final season hits differently when you begin reviewing before the anxiety of the end of the semesters hits you. When you start early:

  • You actually have the time to relearn things you thought you remembered
  • You can study in smaller chunks, rather than very long ones
  • You aren’t staying up until the sunrise

Even just 20-30 minutes a day leading up to finals will have your future self thanking you.

  1. Go to Office Hours, SERIOUSLY!!

Your professors are here to help you, and they want to. Whether you’re confused about something from weeks ago in class, or want some guidance on a final paper, office hours are how you can get ahead.

  • Professors can clarify concepts quicker than it would take to read all of your notes
  • They usually tell you what the exam focuses on
  • They see that you care and are putting in the effort, giving yourself a good look to your professor

Don’t be scared to show up, they want to see you there!

  1. Flashcards = Your Bestfriend

That giant index card will be the best thing you’ve met. You can use them for a multitude of reasons:

  • Definitions and key concepts
  • Dates, formulas, theories, and vocab
  • Rapid-fire memorization session before class, walking around campus, or doing cardio at the gym

Whether you prefer the physical cards or an app like Quizlet, the spaced repetition works and will help you ace what’s to come.

  1. Study with your friends!

Studying with friends is not only more fun, but also helps you learn better. When you explain material out loud, your brain needs to organize your thoughts much more clearly. Plus, having someone ask you questions on the spot forces you to recall quickly, which can help you with time management for your test.

Final season does not have to be scary. With planning, support, and a bucketload of flashcards, finals will feel more than manageable. When it’s all over, you will feel an instant wave of relief, and you should celebrate!
