Food insecurity is a real challenge for students in Cincinnati, affecting their ability to focus, study, and thrive on campus. Local food drives are stepping in to fill the gap, providing resources and support so students can concentrate on their education without worrying about their next meal.

The City of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment & Sustainability reports that many residents live in areas considered food deserts, where access to affordable and healthy food is very limited.

Local organizations play a crucial role in filling these gaps. Freestore Foodbank, located at 3401 Rosenthal Way, is one of the largest providers of food assistance, supporting thousands of families each year. In its most recent fiscal year, Freestore delivered 47.2 million meals while also helping residents with SNAP applications, transportation assistance, and other services.

To support students facing financial strain or inconsistent access to meals, UC operates the Bearcats Pantry and Resource Center. All currently enrolled students can access the pantry by presenting their student ID, with no additional questions asked. Students may visit weekly to select up to 12 pounds of groceries. For those with tight schedules, the pantry also offers to-go bags. Located in Stratford Heights, building 16, room 101, the pantry is open to any Bearcat in need. They provided services to more than 2,200 students during the 2024-25 academic year.

Food banks form a network that helps Cincinnati respond to food insecurity. By distributing millions of pounds of food, these resources ensure that students and families have a reliable source of nourishment when they need it most.

Make a direct impact this holiday season by donating food or funds to help UC students and staff facing food insecurity. Reach out to the BCP and Resource Center or call 513-556-3780 to make a real difference.
