There are so many factors to consider when choosing where to spend the next four years of your college life. For me, one of the biggest factors in my decision was the kind of environment I wanted to experience. Big city or college town? Cozy predictability or full-blown chaos? I went with the chaos, and I don’t regret a single minute. Here are five of the reasons I’m so glad I chose the city life.
- EASIER TO FIND COMMUNITY
-
Anna Thetard / Her Campus Going to school in a big city means you’re always surrounded by new people with all kinds of interests and hobbies. If you meet a group and it’s not your vibe, no worries! There are countless other communities to explore. In a city, you can experiment, connect, and find the people who really click with you.
- ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DO
-
Lindsay Thompson / Her Campus While smaller college towns might have tight-knit game day traditions and Greek life, bigger cities offer a constant variety of things to do. From pop-up events to concerts, street fairs, and museum nights, there’s always something happening. You’ll never run out of ways to explore, learn or just enjoy yourself.
- CAREER GROWTH & OPPORTUNITY

- VIBRANT NIGHT LIFE & SOCIAL SCENE
-
The city is alive after dark, with bars, music venues, clubs and late-night hangouts around every corner. Meeting new people and trying new experiences is effortless when there’s always a social scene buzzing. Your weekends (and weeknights) will never feel boring.
- CREATIVE EXPRESSION
-
In a big city, everyone’s all about self-expression, experimenting with fashion, and figuring out who they are. It’s the perfect place to try out new looks, mix up your style, and see what really feels like you. At a time in life when you’re constantly figuring out who you are, the city makes it easy and exciting to explore all sides of yourself.
At the end of the day, choosing a big city over a college town isn’t for everyone. But for me, the chaos has been totally worth it! Between the endless things to do, the career opportunities, the nightlife, and the chance to really explore who I am, there’s no place I’d rather be. If you’re wondering whether school in the big city is for you, just remember: sometimes a little chaos makes life a lot more exciting.
