Let’s be real… staying on campus for Thanksgiving hits different. When everyone else is packing up, blasting their “going home” playlists, and talking about whose mac and cheese is the best (it’s definitely not theirs), you start feeling that little ache like… dang, I’m really about to be here by myself. But listen — being on campus doesn’t mean you can’t make it feel like home. Honestly, it might end up being one of your most peaceful breaks.
First thing: create your vibe. Light a candle if your RA is not doing room checks, blast your favorite playlist: R&B, gospel, or holiday music if you’re already in the spirit, and straighten up your space so it feels warm and cozy. Sometimes, a clean room and good music are all it takes to shift your mood.
Next, find your people. You’re not the only one staying behind. Hit up the group chat, walk to the student center, and see who else is still on campus. Y’all can cook a little Friendsgiving meal, watch movies, laugh at TikToks, or just sit around talking about everything and nothing — that’s home energy right there.
Also? Treat yourself. DoorDash that plate you’ve been craving, start the show you’ve been too busy to watch, journal, do your hair, paint your nails — whatever makes you feel soft and taken care of. This is your time to rest without the noise of classes, organizations, and everybody asking you for something.
And finally, let yourself feel whatever you feel. Missing home is normal, but making your own traditions is powerful too. You’re growing, you’re surviving, and you’re learning how to create comfort wherever you are.
Home isn’t always a place — sometimes it’s a feeling you build for yourself. And baby, you deserve that peace.
