Thanksgiving break is finally here, and for most, it will feel like anything but a break. As finals are lurking around the corner this short “break” is really a cram session mixed with extended family and their poking questions. During this magical week, we all pretend like we’re going to relax but deep down I think we can all admit that this break is shaping up to be anything but relaxing.
Even though during this time we can all feel the stress ramping up, I’ve developed a quick no-stress guide to this short holiday break, because we all deserve to enjoy a break before finals.
- Pack the essentials – not your whole dorm.
I need this reality check too, but don’t bring your whole closet, just the essentials.
- Your laptop (because well.. school)
- One cozy outfit + one cute outfit
- Chargers, toiletries, medications
- Anything you may need for early December deadlines
Overpacking can be the root of so much unnecessary stress. Hauling home a bulking bag, only to turn over in 3 days to come back to school. And if you’re anything like me you come back with even more than you already brought. It may feel hard to leave most of your clothes at the dorm, because God forbid you need that going out top just in case. but the reality is true time and time again, and the truth is you won’t actually end up wearing it.
- Create a Finals Reality Check (Just One Page!!)
Don’t make a full study plan because this can easily lead to being overwhelmed and stressed. Don’t scare yourself.
Instead just write down,
- What’s due between Thanksgiving and finals
- The dates
- How long each thing will actually take
That’s it. Having this list can stop academic anxiety from ruining your break.
- Prepare Your “College Update” Answers
I can almost guarantee you will be asked these questions…
- How are your classes?
- Do you have a significant other?
- What are you doing after graduation?
- Do you like U Mich?
Choose your script now, because you will be answering these questions allllll thanksgiving day.
- Protect Your Peace
Thanksgiving break can be loud. Family, friends, traveling, it can all overwhelm your body and mind. Give yourself space to breathe and recenter.
- A walk outside
- Solo coffee run
- Reading something that is NOT for class
- Naps (for mental health purposes)
This time of the year is truly a lot for us college students. Giving yourself space to relax and breathe can help keep you mentally and physically healthy. Ultimately rejuvenating yourself for the busy holiday and finals season that is upon us.
- Don’t Overcommit Yourself With Hometown Plans
This is truly one of the biggest struggles I have when coming home. When you arrive back in your hometown, suddenly everyone wants to make plans and see you. Obviously this is not a negative thing, but it can end up being overwhelming. Since breaks are so short, try this:
- Pick 1-3 people you genuinely want to see
- Say no when you need to (You are not the bad guy for this)
- You are not obligated to do anything, especially when time with family is already so short
- Let Yourself Enjoy The Little Things
I know I sound like a broken record, but with most U-M students coming back early for the OSU game, Thanksgiving break ends up feeling really short. Try and take notice of the little things that make you feel good such as,
- Sleeping in your own bed
- Home-cooked food
- Not having to walk across campus in the cold
- Seeing pets if you have them!
Let yourself enjoy the reasons it’s nice to be home.
- Start the Reset Early
Since most U Mich students will be coming back to Ann Arbor early for the big game, our Saturdays are already booked. To avoid total Sunday Scaries try unpacking the second you get back, check deadlines, and be as proactive as possible. That way, Sunday morning can be restful and by the evening you can go to bed early and be ready and rested for the prime time finals season.
Holiday season can be hard already, try and take this short break to refuel and rest as much as possible. School will always be here, so take time home with your loved ones, pets, and good food!
