With the release of Wicked: For Good on November 21st, the world is once again being captivated by the cultural phenomenon. Given its immense popularity, it has been many people’s introduction to the world of musical theater and stage productions. If you loved Wicked and want to see more of what theater has to offer, here are some good places to start.

hairspray

While this musical comedy was originally written for live theater, there are a couple of great film adaptations that capture the spirit of this delightful show. The 2007 movie adaptation is probably the most watched version, but I definitely prefer the 2016 production of Hairspray Live! This performance features a more live theater feel, with fewer camera angles and minimal set design. It also stars Ariana Grande and Kristen Chenoweth along with several other familiar faces.

chicago

If you love a dramatic, exciting story and show-stopping musical numbers, you’ll love Chicago. With familiar, vaudevillian style songs and a star-studded cast, the 2002 movie adaptation was an instant hit. Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly become friends and partners in crime by making the best of their bad situations and come out on top in the end.

the sound of music

A timeless classic and family-friendly favorite, The Sound of Music is a familiar, lovable story wrapped in catchy, memorable songs. Julie Andrews stars and brings some of her best work to this 1965 adaptation of the popular broadway show. This show is perfect for younger Wicked fans.
