Running Toward Thanksgiving: My Journey to a 5k

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, many people are focused on turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and travel. This year, I decided to add something new to the holiday: running my first 5k.

What started as a small personal challenge has transformed into a routine that has changed how I feel in my body, boosted my confidence, and influenced how I approach goals.

I began training a couple of months ago, with one simple goal: finish a 5k without stopping. At the time, I was running only short distances and hadn’t engaged in any real endurance training in years. I wanted to push myself physically and mentally. I committed to gradually increasing my mileage week by week.

My routine now includes running two to three times a week, typically covering one to three miles each time. On days when running feels challenging, I remind myself of how far I’ve come. The first mile used to leave me feeling exhausted, but now it feels like a warm-up.

I’ve also added one day of strength training each week, which has helped me feel more powerful and stable when I run.

The biggest changes I’ve experienced weren’t just physical; they were functional as well. My runs have started to feel smoother, my endurance has increased, and I’ve noticed real strength building in my legs and core. This journey has shown me that progress can be subtle but powerful.

As Thanksgiving approaches, I feel both nerves and excitement. Running this 5k isn’t just about crossing the finish line; it’s about proving to myself that I can set a goal, stay consistent, and push through the days when motivation wanes.

Regardless of whether I end up sprinting or jogging slowly across the finish line, I know one thing for sure: this journey has already been worth it. After the race, I will be celebrating with a full plate of Thanksgiving food, guilt-free and proud.

My name is Cierra, and I’m excited to be joining the writers’ team this semester. I’m currently a first-year transfer student at San José State University, majoring in Journalism. Writing has always been a big part of who I am, and being able to continue developing my skills while contributing to a community-driven platform feels like the perfect opportunity to grow both as a student and as a writer. I transferred to SJSU from Las Positas Community College, where I started my journey and discovered my love for journalism. What draws me most to this field is the chance to interview unique people, discover San Jose, and share stories that matter—whether that means spotlighting unique student experiences, covering events, or diving into bigger issues that affect our community. I’ve always believed that writing is more than just words on a page; it’s a way to connect people, spark conversations, and inspire change. Outside of academics, I enjoy exploring new places, staying fit, and connecting with people who have different perspectives. I’m really looking forward to building my voice as a writer and contributing to stories that highlight the diverse experiences at SJSU.
