How to Dress like you are in Sex and the City

Beginning in 1998, Sex and the City became one of the most iconic shows, introducing a group of four friends in New York City. We watched their love lives unfold, the inner workings of girlhood and friendship, but most importantly, fashion.

Each woman had unique, iconic outfits, with costume designer Patricia Field mixing high-end designer labels with vintage pieces. Almost 30 years later, these women remain a muse for fashion lovers. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda are still inspiring fashion trends to this day, and I will guide you exactly how to dress like each woman.

  1. Carrie Bradshaw

The obvious staple to dress like Carrie would be to own a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels–nothing is more Carrie Bradshaw than this.

Carrie often blended neutral basics with eccentric patterns. Whether it be a simple top with a striped skirt or a simple dress with a floral jacket, she was not afraid of patterns.

We often saw Carrie in midi skirts, in fun patterns or textures, flowy or pencil. Pair a midi skirt with a neutral top, a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels, and you are in perfect Carrie attire.

Another option is Carrie’s love for a slip dress. My personal favorite is the silk white dress, as she runs into Mr. Big during his engagement party.

Most importantly, Carrie loved to accessorize. In every single outfit in the early seasons of Sex and the City, she wore her iconic “Carrie” gold nameplate necklace. Besides this, she loved statement necklaces and a statement belt over her dresses.

  1. Samantha Jones

Samantha loved to dress boldly and glamorously, a perfect reflection of her personality. Most importantly, she was daring and not afraid to wear an outfit that drew attention.

Iconically, Samantha loved a power suit. She often wore suit jackets with deep necklines, structured shoulders, and cinched waists, utilizing a range of colors like bright pink, red, white, and even yellow.

Another Samantha staple is large fur coats and animal prints. Whether it be a simple shirt and jeans underneath or a dress, pairing it with a large fur coat is exactly what Samantha would do. With animal prints, she mixed leopard print with simple pieces, letting the leopard be the statement of the outfit.

Finally, who would Samantha be without the color red? Try to incorporate red in most of your outfits, whether it be a daring top, a V-neck dress, or paired with low-rise jeans.

  1. Charlotte York

Charlotte, the iconic Upper East Side countryside chic aesthetic. Her style is timeless, classy, and feminine.

Fill your closet with timeless neutral basics ranging from shirts, sweaters, long sleeves, and button-ups. These pieces must be simple colors and have classic silhouettes.

Charlotte was extremely feminine, and her style incorporated her flirty side. Add lace, bows, frills, glitter, pinks, and reds to really encapsulate Charlotte’s dainty, feminine style.

She also did not shy away from patterns, but they must be classic and chic. The patterns she wore were plaid, gingham, houndstooth, or polka dots.

Charlotte often wore a coat or cardigan for cooler weather. She loved wearing a neutral cardigan with a tank top underneath, paired with skirts, pants, or jeans. For coats, they must be structured and once again, neutral colored or a flirty light pink.

  1. Miranda Hobbes

Miranda’s style combines modest corporate chic, effortlessly smart style, and androgynous elements.

Working as a Corporate Lawyer, she always wore tailored suits, most often in black, gray, or blue, reflecting her career-focused attitude.

Staying within her smart style, she loved a classic turtleneck. She wore turtleneck sweaters, tops, or paired them with a fitted jacket.

She loves a structured coat, whether it be a jacket or a blazer. Similarly, she dressed down formal basics, pairing tailored trousers or pencil skirts with fun graphic tops or casual button-ups. Button-ups were a definite staple for Miranda, layering over tank tops or a bralette.

Finally, for special occasions, nothing is more Miranda than wearing a simple little black dress. Timeless and elegant, if there was an occasion, she would find the perfect black dress to wear.
